    Trim Hydrolic Pump Issue

New with the whole working on the boat thing so bear with me as it may come out as a bit of a ramble.

Got my boat out of storage in Feb. It started up and ran well before I left the storage place. Trim on the engine was working as well. Parked it next to the house and haven't really messed with it until a couple of weeks ago. I changed out the batteries and cleaned the wiring and such but now my trim doesn't work.
Just finished taking the lower battery out and making sure I didn't miss a wire or anything. Still not working.
I do know that before when I hit the trim button it would spike on the voltmeter. It's not doing that now.

Anyone know what all may be the problem?

    Thanks,
    Tim

    Tim,

These things are simple, if all your wires are connected then move on to the two parts a switch and the actual pump that makes the motor go up and down. you can try to lightly tap on the cilinoid to bust a few ox of rust or corrosion off the internal components or you can go and do a voltage test on the switch.....(requires a voltmeter and electric know how). Odds are it is your pump, in the worst case while attempting all this there is a relief screw on the side if you need to reposition the motor for repair or transport.

    Hope this helps
    Mike

There is a couple things that can happen to trim systems that are most common.

    1. You could have a leak allowing saltwater in and created corrosion inside the pump
    2. Bad trim motor
    3. Bad trim relay
    4. Bad Trim Switch

There is a manual release screw on the trim unit that you can give a turn or two out to manually lift it or lower it. You will need a couple people to obviously raise it but lowering is a breeze

If its a stuck valve withing the hydraulic unit, 9 time out of 10 it is best just to replace. There are some people that will rebuild the unit, but it has so many little things its very labor intense, and there is really no guarantee they got it all and its fixed till they put it back together.

Most Yamaha trim unit/pump assemble are in the 1600 range for the part it self.

    The trim motor is 200-400

The relay I am not sure off the top of my head but its under a 100 bucks

If its a verado there is additional electric control boxes

So it really depends on the application

If you hit the trim switch and you here the motor run but the engine does not go any where, there is probably corrosion within the unit or a leak that allowed the fluid to get low

Hope this helps any direct questions just ask

Thanks for the help! I look at it some more today and beat it around a bit. No luck. Just got back from dumping it at the shop. I start leave/vacation next week and I want to make sure she's up at running so I can get out on the water A LOT!!

    Thanks again,
    Tim

I agree!! I put the boat on the market yesterday!! Sell the boat and my old house and it's new boat time!!

If I'm lucky it'll happen soon but as long as this one is running and lets me get out I'll be happy!

A few questions, what kind of engine, can you here the trim pump running or relay clicking?

It's an OMC 235 and it's not making any noises at all. No running and no clicking.

I would double check that you didn't miss a ground or a positive wire on the battery. The fact that there is no sign of a draw on your voltmeter when you activate the trim switch would incicate you missed a wire or your relay, trim switch, or motor are faulty.
