Towing w/ outboars

Ok guys, there seems to be much debate on how to positions your outboard motors when trailering down the road. I have always lifted the motor up and then switched down the lock lever. Then I would trim back down till the hydrolic was snug.

I've been told to do this and not to. ALot of people trailor with the motors all the way down or as low as they will go so not to hit the road during travel.

What your thoughts here guys? Any suggestions or other maybr better ideas here? How bout using a trasom saver?

I've always put the engine up and locked 1 to relive the pressure off the hydro from the travel. 2 that is want the locking lever was desined for and 3. to keep from crapping out the lower unit on a bump or some other road way debries. by placint the engine up the onlt real hazard it the drunk that is flying up behind you in a go fast car

That's what I thought, and thats what I'll continue to do. DO you keep the motors in gear? I do, because I was told that a prop spinning in tha air is hard because the oil is in a downward slope preventing the gears to be soaked in the oil. Don't know if its true but thats what I practiced.

I saw a trailer that had what looked like a transome saver built in. It's defnately a good idea with the weight of motors these days banging on the hrdraulics and the stress on the transom. It is a good idea to invest in a transom saver.

My advise is to do whatever your motor owner's manual says. Mine says the motor should be trailered in the normal running position. If there is insufficient road clearence, trailer in a tilt position, using a motor support device. I use a 2x4.
It does say in big bold letters, DO NOT USE THE TILT SUPPORT LEVER/KNOB WHEN TRAILERING.

Put your motors in gear and that will eliminate the props spinning and I got something called m-ywedge.com and it works great. Check out their website. It simple but works wells for my 150 HPDI's

My owner's guide also says not to trailer with the motors locked in the up position. I've never thought about keeping the boat in gear to stop the props from spinning. That's a good idea.
