Thru hull or shoot thru tranducer for a Glacier Bay
Hey guys,
We run a 2004 Glacier Bay Canyon Runner and are upgrading to a chartplotter. We have decide on the Raymarine C120 or the Garmin 4000 series. Unfortunately the Garmins aren't out yet. My question is does anyone run the thru hull or shoot thru transducers on their GB? If so how well do they work? We would like to leave the hull alone for ovious reasons but don't mind installing a thru hull if that is going to work best. We like the C120 sonar a lot but the "pictures" of the graffics on the Garmin(hard to tell without a unit to look at). Thanks for any input. |

I'm not familiar with your boat but just went through this same situation. Thru hull is concerning as you are cutting a hole in your boat and there could be issues with drag & it's effects on your boat's performance. For a shoot thru, I ran into the issue of having enough room to fit the unit, which I did not. so I ended up where I started, with a transom mount. All info that I got on the shoot thru's was very positive. Maybe this will help.

If your hull bottom is solid glass the shoot through is the way to go if your bottom is cored it's a pain in the butt.

Just remember that you wiill lose up to 30% of your power shooting through the hull. So, a 1000 watt becomes 700. That may be a problem especially offshore.

Transducers
I bought a new boat last year & was talked into a shoot-thru transducer. I lost about 30% of power & always loose the reading when I need it.
Don't be afraid to make holes in your hull . Find a good marine shop & let them do the install. They do it everyday On all sizes of boats. Another thing to consider, with a thru the hull transducer you can get a temperature indicator. You can't with a shoot-thru. PS I'm having a thru the hull installed next week. Also have you looked at the E-120? Alot more graphics than the c-120. Good luck |

I have a Canyon Runner myself and have the new Furuno 582 digital with a 600W X-Ducer transom mount. My understanding is that you are going to have a very hard time trying to find a place to mount a shoot through. So far, I have marked water up to 1500' deep, but haven't gone deeper than that. That was in 50KhZ mode.

I can't give you a number on the power loss but I can tell you without a doubt you will see a loss in performance. I have run a Furuno 582 with a transom mount, shoot thru and thru hull. The thru hull outperforms the other 2 hands down.
