I have a Contender with the Furuno Transducer fiberglassed flush mounted in the V of my hull 2/3 back.
My temp sensor is going (temps are reading too cool) and I am wondering how I go about replacing the sensor. There is a hollow threaded rod with a wire going into it inside my bilge that goes to my transducer. Can I replace the sensor or do I have to replace the whole transducer??? Is this something I can do myself or should I consult my Marine Electronics technician??? Any help would be appreciated!!

Lucian,
We need to do a bit of research to see whether the temp sensor can be replaced. If so, then should be manageable. If not, then you would have to replace the entire transducer. Or, we could see if your system will accept a separate temperature input. If it will, then the easiest would be a separate temp sensor on the transom. When do you want to look at it? Brian

I believe that the only part you can replace is the speed sensor and the temp is in the main body of the transducer. I am pretty sure you would have to replace the whole transducer to get your temp back. Its probraly similar to the b744 but a earlier model....Mark

Did you try......
There may be a metal button on the bottom of the transducer. This should be the temp sensor. Did you try cleanng it? Just a thought. Also, I think some units temps can be calibrated [not the sensor but the machine]. Ask Ricktronic. Any thoughts Eric?

it most likely seems that you will have to replace the ducer. i am looking a little further into this, what model ducer do you have?? if it is a 1kw ducer, you are outt luck, the thermister is internal.
hey fritz!!

Any 1kW ducer has an internal temp sensor so the whole ducer would need to be replaced. The popular 600W ducer called a B744 has a replaceable insert than handles speed/temp and this can be replaced. An easy way to determine of you have this is to see if there is a paddlewheel on the outside or see if there is a a 1.5" wide black insert right down the middle that you can see from the inside of the boat. If there is no paddlewheel or black insert then it is most likely a 1kW ducer. It is rare for a manufacturer to go to the trouble of fiberglassing in a 600W ducer anyway. Most likely you have an Airmar B260 or B258. These are both 1kW. You can also easily replace either as they are both readily avail. Instead of replacing an otherwise good ducer you could (as was mentioned) use a separate temp sensor. You could make this an opportunity to get a high precision temp sensor that could connect to your equipment via nmea0183 or into the main ducer line with a Y adapter.
You can go to airmar.com to see which ducer you have. They have detailed dimensions of each model. It is likely the B258 or B260. |

I installed a replacement temp speed sensor or my boat a couple of years ago. It's pretty straightforward if you have a model that will accept that replacement. Yachtjim sounds like he's got this nailed.
