TO SURVEY OR NOT TO SURVEY THAT IS THE QUESTION

I'm pulling the trigger on a 1999 Pursuit 2870 WA with twin 225 yamaha ox66's. This boat shows like its 2-3 years old. Not a spider crack anywhere to be found.
I plan to have the engines throughly checks by a Yamaha dealer, compression, yada yada.
Other than to have the on board systems checked do I really need to spend $400-500 on a boat survey. Won't anything serious be obvious? I'm I just wasting the money?

Hire a surveyor definately.

If nothing else, it is good to have an unemotional set of eyes look at it.

get a small digital camera and shove it in every hole you can and take as many pics a you can and look at everything real good! <~~ ( NOT like your 'googlly-eye'd' about buying a new boat!).. then see if you can get to all the fuel lines from the tank to the engines, look for extra wires hanging / chaffed / etc... , steering, transome and soft spots in the floor. note everything and anything wrong! The $ you save there you can replace the fuel lines and filters completely! all the way back to the engines! DO NOT SKIP THIS PART!!! and have the tank pumped and start at 0 hrs! replace your batteries and clean cables! check steering fluid level and bleed the steering also.. and yo thought you were going to start at no money outta pocket...lol!!! silly you ... they are great boats they ride good and make damn sure you sea-trial it! drive it yourself, make sure wide open throttle is something it can do for a good run. look hard $ does not grow on trees! finally make sure you can do all these things because all i takes is for 1 fuel hose to collapse from the inside out and you will pay a mechanic big money to fix the boat over and over again. and you thought you were gonna save $...lol! do the water pumps and gear oil also... replace the primer balls and filters when you do the fuel lines! hahaha you can take this advice or leave it but this is what I do ... - a day on the water with your girl... priceless! ... a day on the water with your girl being towed in without sea tow or tow boat us and clogged up ethanol fuel lines... well that's a different story ... if you are not smart about boat stuff hire someone that is! pass your hand over and under everything! ( girl, truck, car, house anything you have or you'll never know it!)

At 10 years old, you may need a survey for insurance anyway and yes you should always get one because a good surveyer sees many things the naked untrained eye would never catch.

word to the wise: be careful in chosing a surveyor,there's some real hacks in that buisness-almost as bad as the home inspectors.you want refferences,lots of them.i wish i had a dollar for every time i ran into a boat with major problems,with a recent survey...if that boat is in my area,jersey shore,or maryland,feel free to contact me,i will gladly point you to a few gentleman who will check the boat out for you...

here's a guide line:
you want a moisture test with a "moisture meter",be sure to verify the results on another boat,if possible.
you want everythign checked and rechecked,and do not forget to check the surveyors certificate of insurance-errors and omissions insurance is pretty costly,no insurance ? ask him why,and find someone that does...

No brainer, definitely hire a surveyor. I have had my boat for three years. The survey confirmed what was right and wrong with the boat. Best $700 I spent, seriously. Second Franky Pettolina. He caught the stuff my surveyor missed.

You will need a survey to get an insurance policy and may save you from buying a dog. I second Franky Pettolina.
