SPOT - Satellite Tracking and Messaging Device

I'm intrigued by this device and wonder if anyone would consider going offshore with the SPOT in lieu of an EPIRB?

    http://www.findmespot.com/

Aside from auto-activation, it seems to perform the same function as an EPIRB with the added benefit of the tracking service and messaging, which is great for the loved ones to keep an eye on you (assuming you want that )

P.S. I resurrected this thread in the WAHOONBOX forum, but I think it's more relevant here.

Bass Pro Shops carry them and they were a few dollars cheaper than the SPOT web site.

We sell them too. I think they are awesome. Might actually be an alternative to an epirb, but more importantly it will get an epirb-like device in the hands of lots of boaters that otherwise would not want to pay the high ticket of an epirb. We have already had some customers sending back their reports on how these work. Unlike an epirb that is only used when the poop hits the fan, the SPOT can be used for such things as checking in with your friends or wife, or summoning help in a non-life threatening situation. These things are very cool. MD folks can stop by our store to see one.

I've seen these at a couple sporting goods shows I've been to recently. Seem like a good idea - price is good ($199), but I forget the annual subscription - Jim can you confirm?

I think there was a basic 911 fee w/ an the e-mail update option that sends your lat/lon to pre-set e-mail addresses and intigrates with google earth at an up-charge. I want to say the rates were $49/yr basic or $99/yr w/ the e-mail.

They say they float, and are water proof to 1m. Do they need to be held above water with a clear line of sight for the antenna like a PLB?
