    SPOT GPS Messenger

Does anyone use a SPOT to keep in touch with their wives? I was thinking handheld sat phone, but after talked to some people. They seem a little expensive. I looked up the spot, and for $150 for the unit and $100/year service fee, it seems like a good "mind easer" for my wife.

    they are great!

it will update where you are at on her and your computer.. so easy to just hit "OK" when you get to a waypoint, anchor up, wake up and go fishing, or just hit "OK" when you are back at the dock.. beats the heck outta the roaming fees alone in the bahamas .. mount it in a easy spot to grab and somewhat out of the weather.. keep it on your boat (outboards when you are weekend fishing ' and you can track the boat if someone takes it.. so many pluses even if you take it hiking or hunting

Got it.... use it..... love it.....

Hit the ok every now and again while out there and when I remember and hit it a few times in a row when we are heading back in.

Makes the wifey happy to know where we are.

My batteries went dead a couple of trips ago and she didn't get any of the alerts.... she almost called the CG.

Works great as advertised. I used to hit OK and my wife would get a cell text message. One trip we got busy catching fish and about 4 or 5 hours went by before I hit OK again and she told me she was freaking out thinking the worst. Now I just set it to continuously track so if she wants to know where I am she can click the shared link and see all is good. I bought it for the wife to track me but it's also a backup PLB if for whatever reason your EBIRP does not function.

I too have been considering the SPOT but after reading the reviews at Cabelea's I'm not sure what to do. Would like to hear more input from our readers.

8 reviews between here and Cabellas. One bad, one average, the rest good/great.

One guy even ran it over with his truck and it still works.

The biggest complaint that I see is you must follow the directions. Ummmm

Sometimes it does take 10-20 min for the signal to go thru... but in the grand scheme of things I don't think that is all that bad. It's not supposed to take the place of an EPIRB. I use it to let the wifey know that everything is ok. For that I give it two thumbs up.

Used the SPOT for the first time offshore on Friday. It worked flawlessly. My wife's mind was at ease she said. I think one of the cool parts is that each time you send a message, it logs your lat and long. So I can pull up my account and see on google maps exactly where I was when I sent the message.

    I think that is neat.

I am happy with the unit.

    Mike,
Did you pay extra for the tracking feature? If so is there software you load on your computer to show your track?
