Fred- I am guessing little Freddie told you about the boat. She weighed in at just under 20,000 sopping wet. She was saturated and we figure we are trading at least some water weight for glass. The engines are not too much more than the big blocks, so I am guessing there won't be too much more weight.
P-score- 370 Cummins. The marine architect and Bubbie put the top end at just over 30 K. Seeing as how I have been on 36 Hatterases with 370's that cruised around 25-26 I don't doubt their expertise.
G_Max- We are thinking about that really light color green for the hull and white topside, but we are torn between classic white and color.
The work Bubbie is doing is top notch. The guy makes the process easy and the best part is he doesn't mind if owners help with the project. It nice to be able to put you own hands in once in awhile.
fritz, did you refasten before skinning it with glass?..the glass is only as strong as the frame with your application...i've never seen a planked boat glassed that way and i'm interested in how it will hold up with the seasons...i've seen planked boats get glassed two ways: c-flex works great but is pricey....most common is a 'scratch coat' of 5200 on a dry hull then lay heavy mat on top on it...once the 5200 cures they build the glass out from the mat..the idea is the 5200 allows for normal expansion and contraction of the planks throughout the seasons without delaminating the glass...i'm not sure how your hard shell is going to hold up....anyway,make sure the keel bolts get replaced...darn near all of them were shot on mine....i'd hate to be turning 30kts and lose a keel...
Yes we refastened and we used over 9,000 new screws. Delamination? Keels falling off? Come on buddy, what kind of builder do you think we selected? I don't mean to sound rude, but perhaps you should speak to Bubbie or another professional custom builder back east here before you jump to conclusions about the quality of the work and validity of the methods. Bubbie might even offer you some pointers, if you are really nice to him.![]()
pardon me?...you didn't mean to sound rude?...i think that's EXACTLY what you meant....
anyway, i wasn't drawing any conclusions about the quality of your boat builder...just telling you what i found in refastening that exact same hull...looking at the pics you posted of the strbd side before skinning, you have serious fastener problems that won't go away by covering it up with a hard skin and glass...the keel is fastened by through bolts at each frame...every one will need to be replaced ..
again, i'm not trying to pick apart the quality of work....just letting you know a few important things to double check before everything gets covered up in glass.
i've been a commercial fisherman my entire life and know more than a few things about wooden boat restoration...enough to know that unless you replaced every bolt holding her together, 30kts is a dangerous pipe dream.
good luck with it, john
Man you seem a little thin skinned. All I am saying is that you were making gross assumptions about what has or has not be done prior to skinnng and glassing the hull. What has been done to the hull prior to skinning and glassing could damn near fill a text book. Check your PM!
not drawing conclusions about the quality of the boat restorer....
yes, you can really tell from just a photo
9000 screws will get you a good start on refastening, but it will take another 9k to finish the job...not to mention the 40 keel bolts and the 400 or so bolts that hold the frames together....this boat had cut frames that were bolted together and not steam bent one piece frames.
i own the same hull and have painstakingly replaced every nut, bolt ,and screw myself...i know where every bolt is and which ones are sure to be shot...disregard the info if you want, but there are very few of these boats left and finding someone that has refastened one is even rarer...copping an attitude and being rude with one of the few left that know this boat is foolish.
like i said, good luck with it......i'm out
