Question Simrad NSE12 with BSM-1 Performance Question

I recently installed a Simrad NSE12 with BSM-1 sounder and B-260 transducer. When I was offshore this weekend, while I had a good bottom lock over 3000', I didn't see one fish mark, bait ball, etc. Tried turning up the gain a lot and did get to the point where I could see some interference and the thermocline, but never saw anything other than the bottom, and didn't see any typical bait piles on the bottom either. While it's possible that I just didn't troll over and fish or bait in 9 hours of trolling, I'm used to seeing something more on my old Furuno recorder. Had no problem spotting a small wreck in 50feet of water.

Was wondering if anyone here had experience in deep water with this set up.

In 3000 feet of water it would have to be a massive school of something to be big enough to show up. I would think you need to set a manual range to show the top portion of the water to see anything near the surface.
