    Question Simrad AP16 vs AP26

Looking to do an AP this winter. From my understanding the AP26 has the trolling patterns and the knob (which is supposed to be easy to use). The AP16 has a smaller head unit, but I have the space for either.

Are there any other differences between the two units that are noteworthy??? I'm trying to figure out if the extra $$$ for the AP26 is worth it or not. Any help / thoughts would be appreciated.

Boat is a Hydra Sports Vector CC 2796.

    thanks!!

I went with the 25 the trolling patterns are worth the money alone. The knob is very easy to use.I'm not sure about the 26 but the 25 is a more "powerful" unit and supposedly will track better in rough water.

We have the AP26 on our boat with the knob and it works great couple clicks and it changes the course nice for avoiding without completing resetting but an up or down button works the same.

I do believe that they changed the models on it to something like AP42 or something else.

Also depending on your actual application you may not want to overlook the TR1 Autopilot now owned by Garmin you have push button troll patterns and a nice MOB feature where you hit the MOB button and it returns you to that way point immediately

Both Simrad and TR-1 pilots are THE BEST!

    ap26

brew, go with the ap26. perfect for when you are fishing with a buddy. the troll patterns will keep you right on the ledge. you can also do circle patterns. (perfect when spotting tuna on the surface!)

remember- you wont see the new garmin product until 3rd quarter this year. the new simrad, mabye middle of summer...

I have the Ap25 and it has held course in over 8' seas... I'm a little old school when it comes to the trolling.... I prefer the el-manual method.....

You nailed the differences. Also the 26 will display rudder angle but thats not really helpful on an outboard boat since you can just turn around to look. Make sure you get the VF (virtual feedback) version so you don't have a rudder reference unit to deal with. These have the RC36 compass. If you have radar on the boat and want to use radar overlay (if your multifunction display is capable) then get the AC20 course computer with nmea-out to get fast heading data to your MFD.

That Seacraft looks familiar. Did you happen to buy it from a guy from Kent Island? A friend of mine had the same boat and sold it a few years back. Awesome boat!!!

That would be the one. You should see it now. If your friend is ever on KI tell him to look me up. I think he would be interested in all the restoration I have done to it.

I'll let him know. We'll be fishing the Dry Tortugas for 3 days in Feb on his 42' Torres.
