    Shaft tube help

Does anyone know where I can find a exploded view of the stuffing box and the packing glands? I have a leak at the stuffing box where it comes into the boat and its not from the packing leaking. Theres a brass nut next to the fiberglass shaft tube and its leaking between these 2 pieces. The packing gland is after the nut and is fine. I'm just trying to see what all has to be done to fix this. Heres a pic for reference. You can see the fiberglass tube area and then theres the brass nut (there is also a nut on the outside of the hull) then theres the hose and clamps for the packing with the adjusting nuts at the end.

Hard for me to see , is it a dripless seal or is a stuffing box with Packing ? do you have a blow up of the unit

If it is a stuffing box with packing ,and it is packed correctly you will need to gradually tighten the nut until the drip slows
a little drippage is allowed even if it is all correct

If it is a dripless seal then there may be no dripping once rebuilt with new seals and adjusted

hey cdail, i agree, you need to slowly tighten down on the packing gland until it just barely drips, if you over-tighten it will overheat and drip worse.
if it were me though , i would eliminate the the "old-style" packing flange and packing and glass in a tube and install a tide's unit. i have built a dozen sportfishes and have had no problems , you can install a spare seal to ride in front of the tide's housing and replace it if ever needed.

    good luck

My 35 Bertram has the same set up. When I purchased the boat and re-did it, I had to remove the shaft logs and bore them out because I went to a larger shaft. All you should need to do is take them off and apply an ample amount of 5200 and the leak should go away. Mine was dried up pretty bad from age and needed to be re-sealed. Good luck, if you need new ones, try High tide marine, they carry lots of old Bert stuff.

Thanks guys for the responses but the leak is not at the packing. Its leaking were the bronze nut mates to the fiberglass box. The packing is after this area.

On my old boat, there was a short section of heavy reinforced rubber pipe that mated to the fiberglass tube. That was held on with 5200 and clamps. the other end had the brass packing gland attached again with 5200 and clamps - could this be your issue?

    Forgive the rough artwork...

I think if I am understanding everyone correctly this is how mine is. I think its more like a through hull fitting but, I could be wrong.
