it appears that my piston is corroaded in a couple spots, I guess thats the culprit.
I would definitely replace it - Been there, done that - Don't want the risk.
Do you know what model steering cylinder it is? They do make an end seal replacement kit that comes with the spanner wrench.
The one thing you have to be careful of is how long it has been leaking and if there is any corrosion that has formed.
Its usually the end seal.
The only real ***** of a problem is purging the system of air once its replaced.
The model # should be something like H5854
Is the piston corroded or the cap that the seal rides in. From what I've seen usually the seal fails due to corrosion around it and it tears it. But the polished piston itself usually isn't the culprit unless salt has gotten past the seal and the ram hasn't been moved for a long time. If you do replace the end seal you may need the end cap too. Hope you get it fixed!
Jawz is right, any imperfection in the cylinder will cause a leak, even with new seals.
I have a HC5358, fits Yamaha, with warrantee for sale, cheap.
Fast Forward, it's an HC5345, also for a Yamaha. Let me know if you have a good deal on one of these. I purchased the kit with seals and spanner wrench for $150. I have not had time to install though so there is still time to return it. I won't know if I wasted that or not I guess until I try it. If anyone besides Fast Forward has a good deal on HC5345, let me know. Maybe somebody has a piston shaft that is in very good condition for it?

Weekender,
The HC5358 will work for you, it all but the same cylinder.
Read the following from teleflex. Even if for some reason it will not work I will take it back. I will look up the price and let you know.
Hey users:
had a lot of calls this week in regards to when to and when not to use the HC5358 cylinder (aka the Yamaha cylinder)..
I would like to start by explaining how the HC5358 came about..
In 2003-2006 the Merc and Yamaha 4-strokes were almost identical (when talking about the tiller area and space envelopes). When mounting the HC5345, and our tiebar kit (HO6001), the drive bracket of the tiebar would interfere with the cowling, this is what led to the HC5358
What is different?
The ONLY difference between the two cylinders is that the triangular mounting plate (aka pivot plate) is flipped upside down. Doing this allowed us to mount underneath the steering arm, thus, giving full clearance from the cowling.
Do I need HC5358 for a single Yamaha?
NO - you do NOT require the HC5358 for a single engine (remember, we only did it because of twin engine applications and our tiebar). you can use either the HC5345, or the HC5358
so, in end. The HC5345 and the HC5358 are basically identical cylinders, only the position of the pivot plate is different.
NOTE: DO NOT remove this plate to create one or the other. This is a critical area for the safe operation of your vessel. Although it looks easy to do, it is not, and, if it is done incorrectly you are putting yourself and everyone around in danger.
If you have to convert your cylinder (change the plate in any way, shape or form), please contact Fluid Tech @ 904-384-9659. They are trained and have the required tools to complete this task...
