    sea chest info!

Hello all I have run boats that had sea chests' in them, all were large boxes with wholes in the hull bottom allowing water in,

I am looking at building on in a small boat with using one through hull fitting feeding a box ahead of the lazerette, with pumps inside, does anyone have any thoughts or pictures

    Thanks Bo

    Sea Chest

    several ways I have seen

My old boat had built in sea chest in the pump room. Two south bay strainers fed directly under the chest. Pump feeds came from the chest it to the separate pumps that were outside the sea chest. Each pump had separate bronze valves where they left the chest. Ran muriatic acid thru the strainer when I hauled her each year.

Friend's boat has sea chest that is fed one foot forward of the box. The feed has its own sea valve so the feed to the whole box can be closed. The box has a clear plexiglass lid that is sealed and screwed in place. He has 2 livewell pumps in the box, and also has feeds that run from the box to remote mounted pumps.

Presnt boat has sea chest forward in the pump room, but is fed by two south bay strainers that are aft that have separate sea valves. Hoses run forward to the sea chest. Pump feeds come off the chest. No pumps in the chest.

*site wont let me type sea c*ck.....LOL

Why go to all the trouble of building a box? Marine Hardware out on the West Coast makes a 1 to 5 fitting (2" to 5 x 3/4") and a strainer that has a 1 1/2" inlet and 2 x 3/4" and 1 x 1" outlet. The big wholesale houses carry them. Used both and they make great stuff.

    Depend on your demands.
Gen set, AC pumps, Livewell pumps, refrigeration pumps, watermaker, washdown, head.....all pull from same thru hull. Very neat, clean and organized plumbing.

Alternative is multiple thru hulls, or busy manifold system.

    Both work.

depending on where the boat sits, if you normally have a lot of growth, you dont want to pull your ac water thru the seachest. the water constantly running thru there can cause a lot of growth, and accessing the sea chest from underwater to clean isn't exactly convienent.
