Scratched Boat Repair

As new boat owner I was all excited when I finally got it in the water 2 weeks ago, I showed up last week and notice a few scratches and a worn spot that must have occured from the line stretching and the side board coming in contact w/ the piling (which has since been addressed). Looks like it scratched the gel coat pretty good about the diameter of a soda can. Is there a temporary fix for this or should I pull the thing out of the water and have it taken care of professionally now?

If it isn't scracthed thru the gelcoat you could wet sand and polish it untill you haul out. It will look ok but should be proffesinaly repaired to look best.

Just wanted to give you a little more info. Start with 800 or 600 grit sand paper and wet sand the area down. As long as the gel coat is not scratched thru to the darker fiberglass underneath you will be fine just "buffing" it out this way. After the scratch is gone, use some rubbing compound and buff it out a little more. Clean up all gritty residue by spot washing the area. Now using some carnauba paste wax, put the shine back on it. IF, the scratch is showing the dark fiberglass underneath, then you will need a fiberglass gel coat repair kit. I have some hints, tips, and tricks for that as well. The only tricky part is matching the color. Hope this helps.
