My friend Jay said that I should post a couple of pictures of this project, and that some would enjoy it. I'm not much of a computer person, just a fisherman, so I have a hard time gripping the fact that what is just an ordinary thing to me, others would find interesting. Whenever we aren't fishing, we are usually "piddling" around the boat, or in my shop. My mate requested a rocket launcher, so I dug through my scrap pile and found a nice piece of mahogany to work with. My salon doors are mahogany, so it should match pretty nice. No big deal really, I planed it down a little, eyeballed a shape that looked nice to me, cut it out on my bandsaw, ran it around my router with a 1" roundover bit, sanded it down to 220, and began coating it out with West System epoxy, with their Special Coating hardner, which contains UV protectant. I sanded and reapplied until I had 5 coats. Instead of spending $300 for new brackets from Pompanette for it to mount to my fighting chair, I robbed parts off of an old Pompanette helm chair, and made the uprights out of mahogany as well. I ordered four fairly inexpensive stainless rodholders, since we don't plan on actually fishing out of the launcher, it's mostly just another place to put extra poles that aren't in use, but need to be accessable. Four 2" holes drilled in appropriate location, and a coat of clear awlgrip , and we're ready to go.
After 30 years of charter/commercial fishing, and being an owner/operator, you learn to do most everything yourself. Since I sold the 29' hull I had built, I have ample space for projects!
