    Rybovich Book on Schedule

to go to press in a matter of weeks

TWO LIMITED EDITIONS: Offered in two limited editions, the RYBOVICH will be a welcomed addition to the libraries of fishing and boating enthusiasts everywhere.

Rybovich book update: April 1st, 2009 - The world's first Rybovich book is very much underway & on schedule to go off to press in a matter of weeks. This extraordinary book will be available on Amazon this fall, as well as on a special Rybovich book website; details to follow.

Having sorted thru almost 4,000 photos (with Michael's priceless help in labeling the renegades!), I'm delighted to report that the book will feature each and every one of the 79 original Rybo's built by the three Rybovich brothers-a dream which once seemed all but impossible.

With the boats displayed in chronological order, the reader will enjoy a first-hand look at the evolution of the Rybovich hull design and the remarkable sense of originality that made Rybovich the first and finest sportfishing boat. The book explores how each boat -since the launch of Hull #1-has been custom-built to the owners unique specifications, combining a fascinating blend of high-life extravagance & extraordinary performance.
RHINO 1958, #34 At 54 feet, she was the largest Rybovich built at the time
The book inquires into the company's 90-year history and shares my fascination with the unique and sometime eccentric Rybovich customers and the boats they commissioned, such as the giant "Rhino" launched in 1958, (the biggest Rybovich built at the time) with its peculiar legend of sporting built-in tanks to hold whiskey & rum under the berths. Bob Maytag's "Bimini Babe" launched in 1954 was known for the wildest of Cat Cay tournament parties (with the always barefoot Maytag and his dog Chester aboard). Another boat, the 1958 "Carillion" boasted a pipe organ in the main salon, while "Mojo," (also launched in '58) served as inspiration for a famous jazz composer and the spot where he did his best work. The 1969 "Apava" commissioned by a paraplegic sportsman, featured built-in elevators down to the master stateroom and up to the flying bridge. The 1955 "Three Rings" has a unique history of being commissioned by Peter Ballantine of brewery fame at the prompting of Ernest Hemingway (a pioneer of 1930's big game fishing in the Bahamas). The Rybovich book travels in time from the 1947 launch of Hull #1 to the awe-inspiring creations built by Michael today, exploring the unparalleled custom-built boats & the captivating stories they tell.
1954 Rybovich Hull #13, Bimini Babe built for Bob Maytag [heir to the washing machine fortune]
Hull #71 APAVA launched in 1969, now seen in the news as Bernie Madoff’s boat
About the book: Two years in the making, RYBOVICH will be an impressive (and massive-weighing over 7 pounds) 13"x15"coffee table book. With over 300 pages printed on heavy-weight paper with more than 350 archival and commissioned photographs, vintage blueprints, personal photographs and never before published essays, the book chronicles nine decades of Rybovich boatbuilding in sumptuous detail.

Two collector's editions of RYBOVICH are in production:

The Standard First Edition ( printed in only 1,200 limited-edition copies, each book covered in rich marine blue linen, personally signed) will be launched in celebration of the boatyard's 90th Anniversary. This oversized luxury edition will also include numerous extras that will appeal to the collector such as full sized limited-edition reproductions of rare Rybovich blueprints, signed and numbered, dating from the 1960's.

The ultra-exclusive Commemorative Edition is being published as an exceedingly rare edition of only 79 copies which commemorates the original 79 Rybovich boats built by the three Rybovich brothers. The Commemorative Edition will have all of the features mentioned above, plus a number of top-flight extras (such as a deluxe framed, two-page spread of the particular hull-number the book commemorates) for the fortunate few who appreciate exclusivity. Each copy of the Commemorative Edition will be individually signed and numbered, from 1-79. These books sport a marine blue leather bound cover and gold page-edges, each packaged in its custom presentation case.

The Commemorative Edition books will be priority-reserved for owners of vintage Rybovich boats who request to purchase the edition corresponding with their particular hull-number, with a limited number of copies available to collectors, as well. Those who wish to preorder the Commemorative Edition will receive recognition in the book with their name embossed as Patron in this first and only printing of this most impressive Commemorative Edition.

Further details, pricing and ordering information for the two editions of the Rybovich book will be available soon. As the total expense of producing these two extravagant limited-edition Rybovich books has not yet been finalized, the estimated cost of these exceptional books appears to be approximately $99 for the Standard First Edition and appropriately more for the Commemorative Edition. Final pricing and ordering information will be emailed in several weeks once all production and marketing costs have been calculated. Also included in the next Update will be a detailed list of extras befitting the book of the most important sportfishing boats the world has ever known.

Again, my thanks go out to each and every one of you for sharing your photography & recollections that have helped make the Rybovich book a worthy tribute to the three Rybovich men.

    All the best,

Me too!, Its great to be able to read about this history and the evolution of such great boats

I hope this drives more people to record what they have done. I remember reading about someNorth Carolina builders riding down to Florida and seeing what they were doing and bringing that technology back up the coast and incorporating it in a manor that works up this way along with things that the visits down south help provoke

If you are wondering what to ask for Christmas this year, I have the answer. I just got my Rybovich Book and I gotta tell you, it's unreal. This book was put together by Tommy Rybovich's daughter Pat Rybovich and she did an amazing job. She spent years collecting old photos and stories about these beautiful boats and the colorful owners and captains that ran them. Many sportfishing innovations that we take for granted, like the outrigger, fighting chair, tuna tower and many others were developed and refined by Rybovich during the Cat Cay Tuna Tournaments of the 1930's and 1940's. The book is full of previously unpublished black and white photos of these early tournaments. It's very cool to see photos of the pioneers of this sport that we all love. Ernest Hemingway brought his boat, Pilar, to Rybovich to be fitted with these innovations in 1935. Rybovich opened their boat yard in 1919, building and repairing commercial fishing boats. Starting with the first modern sportfishing machine in 1947, Miss Chevy II, Rybovich has built 126 boats. There is a history and description, as well as numerous pictures of each hull. It's a giant book, nearly twice the size and weight of any other coffee table book. You can see how big it is in the last picture with my son holding the book. Here's the link to the book, and I understand that if you add your email to the update list at the bottom of the web page, you will be offered holiday pricing on the book:
