Rybo Runner Repower & Rebuild

I have recently purchased a 30 Rybo Runner ('86). Current power is twin gas inboards with v-drives. Initial major decision is power, replace with new EFI Gas, size may be issue? Convert to diesel single or twin? Place the typical twin 4 strokes on bracket?

Does anyone have any comments on the running properties of this hull with twin inboards as I have always liked wt down low in the hull. Current configuration are stagered. Any input on speed and fuel usage?

If I convert to 4 strokes, worried about moving 1000# back 10' and up 3'??? Any experience with such a transition of wt?

Will post pics and progress after I get this project moving. The hull is in great condition and I am planning a total retrofit
thanks Tom

I would bracket that thing with a set of etek 250's..

1. for fuel , cost, weight, service and youd smile!
2. re-sale #'s would be great with this conversion.
3. those hulls are a great sea boat ride along with just a great family truckster option. keep it simple and smile. if your still planning to go inboard / outboards you will not have the re-sale value of what you put in to it unless they are diesels at $50k when your done. $27k has your props. filters. new tank, and engines on the back with the oil computers set. a set of 250 yama older 2 strokes and your at $8k plus rigging so you have a cpl ways to go... they are giving away inboards now though because of the economy so your choices are many!

Boat: Boatless & looking
It would be sweet with a pair of Steyr's, but cheaper with outboards. Twin 250 or 300 E-Tec's would make her scream. The boat will run great with either power choice but the inboard will ride better for sure.

I used to own the exact same boat with twin inboards and those V-drives. What a bunch of hardware!!! That boat was originally made for outboards and performs best as an outboard boat. I went a different route with my conversion, but I did regret not going to outboards. Anyway, what a great riding boat and best of luck on your restoration.

I've read the original design was spec'd for upto trip outboards. W/ the 11' beam, and using a flotation backet, I don't think weight is an issue for twins ob's. There are at least three companies currently producing this hull - Dusky 33, Typhoon, and Jersey Cape 31 (IO and no steps). Typhoon offers it both in a twin OB, and a single engine/twin IO config w/ a ZF tranny which post some good efficiency #'s.

That's a sweet hull. If it were me, I'd be looking at converting to twin 300 OB's (or Verado 350 ).

Post up some pics when you get into the project.

Why the regret to not go OB's

Why the regret to not go OB's
Would I need to consider re-configuration of fuel tanks with OB's

If your boat is configured like mine, you have 3 fuel tanks. Two 70 gallon saddle tanks and a 74 gallon tank under the front console seat. If you go outboards, you could use the same tanks, but you'd be limited with the fuel capacity. You'll be amazed how much room becomes available in the boat once you remove all that hardware from the inboards. You can easily put a large fuel tank under the leaning post that will hold over 400 gallons (Which will provide that belly weight that you are looking for).

I went with a Pulsedrive system with straight shafts out of the rear of the boat. Nice simple system, due to my shallow water requirements, but outboards would have been much more versatile. The new outboards out there come with great warranties.
