    should i buy a rybo?

I have been reading this info on the rybo and the one i want to trade for my 427 vette has a pair of 225 honda 4 strokes.. I will have to ck and see if the steps are filled in and some other helpful info ..U guys are greart..But should i trade?? I have a 66 427 vette worth about 75 grand and the boat is a 1988 repower and redone in 2004.. 147 hours total since the redo..I want to fish but want a great boat and it seemsd that this hull is it.. I cannot afford a 150 thousand yellow fin ..The owner told me he paid 97 for this boat and put another 409 in it.Tower upper controls and just gorgeous.. I am going to go to mass and ride in her next week Any feed back would help 225 328 9790./I would like some advice also..

reply to sidney - honda power & other comments

    Sid:

If you ever talk to Cal he will tell you that 225's were plenty fine to drive these boats. Typhoon Marine is currently building the boat (with Cal's blessing) and powering with these Hondas. You may want to contact them for performance numbers (typhoonmarine.com). Their shop is located in Hialeah, Florida. The owner, Bruce, is a Jersey (?) boy who is really interested in making a quality product. I hope that they can make it through these tough times.

I recently spoke with the owner of hull no. 88 (the last one built under Rybovich ownership) who had 225 hp saltwater series yamahas for 10 years and has just repowered with 300 hp yamaha two strokes. He tells me cruise is now loafing at 37 knots (40mph), but wasn't sure of fuel burn - He had about 30 hours on the engines - His boat is a straight t-top with no tower.

Attached is a picture of the boat for your review, as well as an earlier version with the original cutouts. You will notice that the side vents are a group of three, small circular holes, as opposed to the original ovals (which our boat, hull no.6 has). As stated by other forum contributors, this was more cosmetic than anything else. For what it's worth, the boat was designed as a 'ventilated' stepped hull.

This August we had our boat soda blasted and took off 26 years of bottom paint! Along with removing about 400 lbs, the hull was faired and sealed with Interlux Interprotect. From our original postings in the forum we have picked up about 2 to 3 mph at the same rpm and fuel burn. By the way, neither we, nor the owner of no.88, ever experienced overheating problems, either with our OMC seadrives (which we ran from 1993 to 2002), or with our current 250 saltwater series Yamahas - We've got just over 500 hrs.on them.

As far as owning a Rybo Runner, it wasn't clear what year (1988?) or hull number of the boat you are looking at. If it is an '88 it was one of the later boats built - they stopped in1989 - We are extremely pleased with our boat after 16 years of ownership ( we just got back from a great week in Green Turtle Cay - over 400 miles total - with no problems) but would tell you that it is prudent to have a surveyor look at the (individual) boat and check it out.

The boat is solidly built, with a contemporary design (check out the number of boats which have 'discovered' stepped hulls recently, including the latest Contender!), and has a pedigree second to none. Last but not least, it is interesting to see how many companies over the years have replicated (and are still) building the hull in varying degrees of deviation from the original design. Jersey Cape, Dusky, and Typhoon Marine are groups that come to mind. These are all modified Rybo Runners.

Hey - good luck - and post some pics of the Mass Rybo!

    Hardtop Pics

I received some pics from Bobby Birdsall of Birdsall Marine of the hardtop he is doing for the boat. I still have a ways to go and he should be finished in about a week or so. I will bring the boat back to Ocean Cty and put it back in the shed and get back to it. It's starting to look like a boat again.

Well the boat is back home and I must say the top came out great. The top is already off the boat and its time to get back to work. This is the second time I have had Birdsall do something for the boat and I must say these guys are top notch and do excellent work. I must say it was worth sending the boat to FL. for this T-Top here are some pics.

Wow! We just saw your T-Top and it looks fantastic. We thought you died but are glad to see your project is alive and (very) well.

Birdsall absolutely makes quality products. If we had known you had your boat at Birdsall's we would have stopped by, taken a look, and said hello - we're in the area regularly.

Did you guys ever make up your mind on power ? Your hull is looking fabulous compared with your first set of pictures...

Thanks.... No not dead just slowed down money being a little tight has slowed me down a bit. I had made up my mind on 300hp verados untill I heard about the 300 v6 Yamaha. I will wait to see how these new motors will do before I pull the trigger. I don't see myself getting power before this coming summer maybe middle or the end of summer hopefully.
