    Running Radar Cable

I just purchased a Garmin- GMR open array radar and was going thru the parts last night. The connectors on the cable are quite large which will be a problem to snake thru my top supports.

It doesn't seem to be the type of connector that you can take the pins out and remove the plug to re-attach later. Everything is sealed up tight.

Can this cable be cut and spliced?

I would keep it the same length that it currently is as I have heard that the length of the wire is calibrated for the unit.

The following is a link to the answer on a Garmin site:http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/support/searchsupport?search_key=GMR%20404[/URL]

Yes it can be, its the only way with any radar. Becareful not to flip the pins up, you can smoke your radar if one is off.

Make sure is sharp bends or where it comes thru the top has a gromment to prevent chaffing

Since its an upgrade if you have wires that are already pulled thru tape a thin diameter string or run a snake before you pull any wires. That way you can get the new cable back down

dont forget the lubricant, makes life better and use heat shrink butt connectors and stagger the splices and heat shrink the whole enchilada.

Get a wire puller, it will make it a lot easier then snaking wire's, we ran all the wire's for my AP on my boat last weekend in about 30min with 2 guys doing it, used a 6ft wire puller, without it I'd still be running them.

That is the exact model we used...would be lost without one of those!! Great for use in the house as well.

    Thanks everyone for you help.

I did remove the existing radar/GPS ant. wires and when I did, I pulled pulling string behind them. The connectors are just a little bit larger then the dia of the sheathed wire that is following thru (not quite as bad as I thought). I am going to try to run them without removing the connector but I wanted to know what your thoughts were on cutting and re-splicing just in case.

Got some wire lube from my electrician and will use it when I pull the new ones.

    Thanks again,

    Ted

I don't know anything about that model but on my Furuno I was able to disconnect inside the dome and run wires through about a 1" hole. Is that possible?

Not with the Garmin.... It looks like a cat5 cable and connection.

The radar should have come with a field install RJ-45 connector that you can install on the end of the cable after you cut the one off.We have installed several Garmin Radars and this is normal to remove the RJ-45 so you can pull the cable thru the pipe.Make sure you have the right wires in the correct spot before crimping the new connector.Good Luck

If you cant pull the cable then Have another chase tube fabricated to go between your radar mount and the console it will save you a lot of time and headaches!! I have had a few made and they were only around $75...Mark
