I don't care what color it is, it will break down at some point. How long you want to be down is the question to be asked. It's hard to beat "tried and true". Frank
Wow, thanks! I wasnt kicking anything, i was suggesting! Infact i am repowering a albemarle with cats, hence me saying you can fit really anything in the Bert 42. And i dont kick anyones products also....And your right who cares what color it is as long as parts are readily available and quick to get then its fine by me. FPT has a massive parts warehouse here in the US. so parts are readily available. Where as i have volvos in another boat and hate them....mainly seeing it took 4 weeks to get some O-Rings for the thing....Sorry SeaPower you seem to want to kick Ivecos without saying it. Your opinions appreciated, but tried and true, yes everythings tried and true, wasnt GM tried and true and Bankrupt! So there is always time for another motor company to make it in the US. Have a good day!

    Lobo,

I'm not shy, if I wanted to kick Iveco, I would. This market is alway's in flux, someone is alway's building a better mouse trap. You mention the problem you had with Volvo about getting seemingly simple part's, guess what me too!!! I've had problem's with other brands aswell, mostly the "offshore" type's. Not pointing finger's or saying that they are an inferior product. My point is before you jump, make double dog sure, that there is service and part's available in your area. A brand that sell's great here may not have the support in other part's of the country. Some brand's that sell great up North, can't be given away down here, just the way it is. Again it doesn't matter what color it is, it boil's down to part's and service when you need it. Because at some point you will. We're on the same page. Frank

Bluewater .. you should talk to cummins..

they have re-built power packages that have warranty's and the little bit of weight you give up is not going to hut you. especially with the room you get in return. they offer 2 years on repowers and they do not have all the fancy electronic stuff cluttering them up. go to a set of the mathers / zf controls and your golden. just my two cents .. good luck!

    Quest,
Just wondering about the how the weight difference will change the boat. Capt D and I were talking tonight and are still wondering what will happen in relation to the full top. This is a picture of the boat.

While, I am not dealing in the larger Cummins, I have the smaller B series. There is something to be said for going to your local auto parts store and being able to order any Cummins part you need Marine or not!

As for weight, you can always add it but it is hard to take it away! Add fuel or other fun stuff!

blue the weight to hp is great!

your only talking about 4-500 lbs each side changing gears even to zf's.. you start looking hard about 'how' the boat 'feels' when she is totally loaded. parts are easy, easy to work on etc.. that boat is way heavy in the first place... I like bertrams...! ran a 42 called adlib for about 8 years with high hp 903's in her.

A friend of mine repowered his 1982 42' Bertram with Yanmar 720's. The step up from the 6v92's was huge in horsepower. He cruises at 29 Kts. and fuel economy is unbelievable. He loves it and the boat flat out eats up the seas. He is very pleased with the package.

When I read the title of the thread the first thing that came to mind was if a set of Yanmar's 720's would fit and be fit with the right size props then that would make a sweet package.

Have you thought about the QSM 11 re con .. we used for the repower in our 48 Viking and could not be happier .. your boat, although 6 feet shorter, weighs nearly what our Viking weighs .. our 75% load cruise is near 27 kts @ 43 gph with a top end of 32kts ... we did ours 2-1/2 yrs ago and have over 4300 hrs with nothing other than an alternator going bad.. we are in MHCYB until Febuary if you want to come by and check the install out ..oh, and we took out 8V92's so the weight difference was pretty great and boat was not adversely affected
