repower 3412--- 1450 Cats or Custom build ?

???.... appreciate some feedback..... boat 2001 60 Hatt 3412's ..were majored......boat SAT...much corrosion/rust intrusion.....no doubt weight differential now compared to old power equals ton of speed. and more economical......C series are the ticket now...WHATS NEXT??.....

motors had minimal use........FL... Bahamas......showing age .....have some estimates......those that know Cats ......roughly what would you say $$$ for an upgrade....?

    repower or.......have a custom built......

i am looking at a 10 year plan...............repower and deal with a depreciating sled and pump less diesel OR......have a custom built that would be new and in the long run be less thirsty and ZOOM......??

ever changing motors ... Detroit days....DDEC and then MTU.......
well my pop/partners opted for the Cats in their last sled.....WOT.....bring the tanker to refill her......

so gain i ask......repower a battlewagon that can withstand a war.....

    or

custom build and enjoy WOT when need be and do not need the tanker..............

10 years ....which is the better bang for the buck .....repower a Hatt or .....or build a custom.....which way would you invest....?

i see many nice customs for sale as i do Hatts and other production/semi customs that are not moving.......i appreciate the SFC folks feedback...ty

If it were my money...I would go with the custom build....you will never recoup the cost of a repower and then you still have other aging support systems to maintain.....not to mention that you will recoup big $$$$ on the difference in fuel costs....

    Good luck!

    REPOWER OR CUSTOM BUILD

    Hey Hatterized,
i agree with jd5652 , not to pat my own back but as a designer and builder of custom rigs , your better of to unload the hat and go for a new build. the repower will give more speed but the old girl cant do new tricks with what she weighs and besides , new power brings other problems , new wheels , shafts? struts? new controls because of new emission regs? the list goes on and on.
however , right now isnt the time to unload the old girl as the used boat market is in the crapper . let me know on the new build as im close by......

    Repower

You might want to check on prices for a repower. Cat dealers are making great deals on new engines. A pair of C32s would look real nice in that engine room!

thanks for the replies....yes i have some options....and as i stated....best bang for the buck in 10 years or so.....i am taking all factors into consideration....and am well aware of a repower entails more than just installing new motors....

yup not easy unloading a big SF in these times....and no doubt...deals are out there on both re-power packages and new rides....

an old family associate has voiced some interest ....that could be a win-win situation.......re-power her.....install stairs in the salon to the bridge (he/she will not climb a bridge ladder) and she gets a new home port in his European city.........and then its to the drawing board and get some plans in the works......for a new custom ride.

Best bang for the buck is to find a lightly used custom that zooms. I think you will save the most this way because if you build new there will be a huge depreciation loss. And no wait.

    Custom V Repower

    Repower............2 months

    Build...............2 years

Sell the Hat and find a used custom. Plenty of them around. Your Hat will be harder to sell and will have depreciated more than a custom rig in this market........Good luck!....
