Replacing caulking on gunwhales, console base, gas tank cover.

Have already removed the old caulking from the tops of the gunnels and planning in doing the bottom of the console and gas tank cover where needed. I am planning on cleaning the old residue off with acetone and rag.

Any pointers or problems, shortcuts I should be aware of? IE do in in thin layers, only put back where the old stuff is shrinking?

will be using 3M 4200(removeable) FC to complete the job.

I did it on mine last year and found a small bead smoothed with your finger worked great...I tried to fill too much at first but got the hang of it using a small bead

You probably already know this but I will say it anyway.

There are a couple different meathods of smoothing it out to finish it nice. Both meathods work on any type of silicone, puddy, 4200, 5200 or any of that type of stuff.

1. Ice cubes-take an ice cube and drag it over the top of the stuff your using and it will smooth it out nice and flat and it won't stick to it either.

2. Spit on finger-thats right, lube it up baby. Spit on the finger will do the same thing. It will let you smooth it out and it won't stick to your finger until all the spit is gone.

Small bead and ice cube huh? Will have to try that.

Spittooee finger just like regular caulking?
I am sure that will be done too just out of habit from my old punchlist days.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the input.

I will be doing this soon as well. Are you painting over the caulk? I was thinking of paiting first then cauking so the paint on the caulk wont crack like it always does after awhile. Let us know how the 4200 works, still havent decided what I'm going to use yet. Thanks

I am not sure what you are caulking but I would put down really really really good tape, on both sides of the joint to be caulked, then use a caulk tool or Ice cube to smooth it out, when done Pull up the tape and you have a beautiful joint. Also Rubbing alcohol works great with wet 3m 00 caulks, to clean up and smooth oput. Not a sharsh on your system like asstone.
