    Reinforced Rod Holder

Anyone have pictures or descriptions on how to reinforce a rod holder similiar to the BFT fishing pics seen on here? I want to try some bent butt - in rod holder fishing as well as deep dropping without ripping out my rod holders.

    Rod holders

Metal backing plates under the gunnel. Holders thru bolted

    Still requires thick sturdy gunnels.

You can see how mine were done. Bolted through the rail with backing plate and then the gusset holding the bottom of the rod holder.

Thanks for the replies 54 and pics. Blitzen. That looks like she will be some craft when you are done with her Blitzen! Is the toe rail molded into the gunnel or was it added afterwards. I have posted here about where to get the pieces in lengths loger than that of a 4'x8' piece of starboard ripped down but may just have to go that route as it will cost me my right arm to ship lengths of what welse as suggested here to Bermuda!

    ohfishalee,
The toe rail is the Barbour Plastics PVC rail. It is both the rub rail and toe rail as one piece bolted though the side. Very clean and simple with less holes in the boat.

As mentioned, your gunnals should be beefy to start and all of the holders need to have backing plates.

If you plan on fishing out of the holders of course you're going to need swivel rod holders.

You can use aluminum or stainless backing plates as well as G10 material.

Or you can make it simple and get rod holders with built in backing plates such as these Release Marine pieces. These are nice because they bolt together from the bottom and gunk won't clog them. I'm not sure if they make them in a swivel version.

A trick we've used in the past is if the rod holder isn't a swivel type, just drop a golf ball in the holder.

I just installed 4 LD Marine Swivel Rod holders in my SeaCraft. They are made specifically for Fighting Giants out of the rod holder. They have a 4 bolt pattern instead of 3 which most the other brands have. They also cover more surface area both above and below the gunwal using an included backing plate. I would post pics of mine but the boat was covered yesterday. If fighting big fish from your gunwal is what you want to do then these are your best option.

A while ago trolling in a CC with a 130s, I was sitting in front of the rod with my elbow on the reel, the rod tip almost went into the water when a fish hit and my fingers got wedge between a reel support and the spool saving the rod. Don't forget to support the bottom end of the rod hold or else the gunnel and gel coat will crack, or the rod holder will rip out.
