Fishskipper, the last one I used still only showed bearing. That was last winter and I think the unit was only a year or so old. A Sitex. One that could estimate distance would be pretty neat, but I've never seen one that could. You usually can tell by the strength of the guy talking on the radio roughly how far away he is. At least 'close' or 'far'. They work great though. You can usually pull out the chart and use the bearing and strength of the voice and take a good guess as to where they are.
Always wondered why these things are fairly rare and also why so expensive. It's old technology, so you'd think they would be 1/3 the cost of what they currently sell at. Supply and demand, I suppose. I'm surprised someone like Furuno or Garmin hasn't jumped in with their version and lowered the market pricing via volume and lower cost purchasing of the components.
