Radar - Open Array vs Radome??
I'm working on finalizing the purchase of a Donzi 32zf that'll be used primarily in the gulf off the TX and LA coasts going after kings primarily.
Previous owner had 2Kw Radome on her but will be keeping the electronics to transfer over to his new boat. So I've got the chance to customize to my liking.
Looking at E-Series stuff from Raymarine at the moment (would love to go with the G-series stuff but more $$$ and can't decide if its worth it, but thats another discussion).
Last boat (cruiser) had a 4Kw Radome on her but she was used primarily in inland waters so the radar was largely just for keeping track of the weather blowing in.
Question I've got is, since I have the option to go with either Open Array or with Radome again, what would you guys chose if you were to do it again? Cost really isn't factoring into the decision at this point, just want first hand experience comparing the Radome output to that of an Open Array system since I haven't personally used an Open Array equipped system previously.
Thanks for any and all replies.
Oh, and if anyone wants to comment on the E-Series vs G-Series, would be happy to listen to that as well.
Thanks,
Brian

IF your offshore go open.

Open array is the best way to go in my opinion.

Crab mustard is good
I have had both, 4kw dome Furuno and now a 6kw Furuno Navnet open array. Dome was great for weather and close in stuff, bouys etc. but the open array is the bomb if your looking for birds, the resolution is fantastic. Wish I could swing the 12kw
now thats THE BOMB.
Good luck,
Troy

All good advice so far. If money is really not a factor then definitely get the open array. Open array radars will have narrower beam widths than their dome counterparts. This contributes to better target definition, and more range. If you want to find birds get a 6kW dome minimum. Since Raymarine doesn't offer 6 then you will need to go 10kW. The G Series will not do anything for you over the E Series.

I think Admin is going to let me have this space
Open array...and if you really want to do yourself a favor, go with Furuno and forego the Raymarine mess.

this kinda has nothing to do with it, but those hi def open array radars are really cool looking...
they spin like ceeling fans ontop of the boat lol

open array
Open array is definately the way to go, much better resolution and picks up birds much better than a dome. As far as the E or G series the G is nothing really better than the E except for the screen, with the G being higher resolution and better contrast, but something that I dont beleive is worth the extra $$
