Thanks for the input guys. We're going the no strainer route with a sea chest. I just came from a meeting down at the shed.
We haven't decided on a separate thru hull for the AC but the plug for the chest has been made to the point of gelcoating it. Now I can spend the money and space I would have spent on the to get the fuel polishing system. We had an interesting discussion on the fuel filtration side of things. The guy installing the systems told us about a boat that he worked on that used a filer element for the generator that cost more than the filters for the mains. We'll be sure not to do that. |

Not sure what you're doing on the fuel filtration side of things, but here's a link to an interesting article and design that works very well......scroll down to the article titled " Marine Fuel Filtration - The Seaboard Way".

James,
Thanks for pointing that article out. Tony is a guru to most Cummins guys but that knowledge can be applied to all diesels. It looks like a couple of WIF sensors per engine are in order as well as a Multi-Stage filtration system. Kind of makes me want to send the Dual Racors back and just rely on a Fleetguard filtration package. I haven't been on boat diesel in over a year since I haven't had the need to. Thanks again for the link! |

FWIW - I had large internal strainers on my last boat that would occasionally get clogged with mussels that grew in the cooling system below the waterline. You would disconnect the lines and pull them out by the handfuls. Boat was in Boston when this happened.
