Garmin is probably the best way to go for a smaller unit, I fiddled with a demo at the MA500 and it was very clear. I heard every unit Furuno Garmin Northstar all work well. Never tinkered with the weather side too much myself tho
If you want the cream of the crop and have the jingle wait till April when the new Furuno 3D units come out it is insane http://www.sportfishermen.com/board/...ghlight=furuno Last edited by LuckyLady; 12-25-2007 at 12:34 AM. |

Here's my two cents. On the lower or main helm station I have Furuno Navnet (radar/plotter) Northstar 952C plotter and Furuno fish finder.
The tower needed to replace the small Garmin plotter. We run outside to the canyon for two day trips and weather is everything to us. We also do yacht delivery and times when the vessel to be delivered has electronics issues so we needed a portable unit. I really didn't want to upgrade my fruono navnet or my northsatr just to get weather but was ready to until I found the little garmin 478C and found that I could mount it in the tower hard wired, then remove it and put it in a bean bag holder and run 7 hours off the battery or plug into a cig lighter. It didn't need any chip and the weather module (XM) ran 300.00 Ended up for 900 plus street price for the garmin and added the xm and 50 a month for the master mariner service andwe covered a lot of bases. What is of great help is looking to the west when your on or past the bank and pan out see the lightening strikes in NH and determine if they are headin at you. My buddy who runs a 24 GW out there all the time put me onto the unit and I will say it's a great dollar value. If your thinking of redoing your electronic array I would opt for a larger unit from any of the above recommended manufacturers as they are all top quality but that is a signifigantly larger investment In any event good luck out there

Getting ready to upgrade from the Lowrance LCX-19C and looking at the Garmin 4210. If I go that way I will sell the 376C. Brian Last edited by ocnslr; 12-26-2007 at 12:04 PM. |

Regards, Jennifer-CRC Bummer, I love my setup & this system. The only thing to complete this system would be weather overlay, as the add on weather module is a very basic, temp/barometer set up. O'well looks like I'll be checking into overlaying weather on my back up, Garmin/chart plotter. Thanks for all the great replies, now I have some informed decisions to make. Regards; gut fish ? ><))))> Remember, Fillet and Release. |

maybe its just me but I dont have near as much info on the XM service as I expected and can get on the internet.Am looking at having the internet setup on the boat.I put a FLIR and the XM weather on the boat at the same time and to me one was worth the money and the other was not.Tom
