    Question On 1991 38 Luhrs

Any opinions on this boat? Their askin 155K. I would use this for the NE Canyons.

    Thanks in advance.

You definitely need to get it surveyed if you are interested in it.

I don't remember the year that Luhrs made the switch from cored bottom to solid FG bottom - You do not want a cored bottom. The switch was late 80s or early 90s.

Thanks CLT. It says Hull material is fiberglass/composite.

    you didn't give any info..

engines, gears, fuel, did you check engine hrs???? lots of questions... cats? yanmars? Volvo? every part of those things in a survey by yourself should be looked at.

A GOOD surveyor is the key here. You may want to check out comparable offering in Viking, Hatteras, Betram, etc. to get a feel for the options you have available.

    Good luck!

Composite is just that - Composite - It might be straight Fiberglass, or it could be cored. Luhrs had big issues with cored bottoms - that's why they made the switch. Just make sure you know what you are getting into.

Most of the 38 luhrs came through with Detriot diesel 6-71 TIB's rate @ 450 or 485hp. This is a bad engine, too much power cranked out of 426 cu inches. They are good for 1500-2000hrs if you are lucky. Also with a short service life and numerous repairs along the way, they are quite hungry. Roughly 18-20 gph per engine while cruising in the lows 20's.

I fish on a 1991 38 like this one frequently that has been repowered with C9 Cat's and top notch everything but the boat feels of poor quality. It shudders badly in light seas.

The cockpit is small and the fish boxes are joke. Small and uninsulated right above the exhaust-better for warming something then cooling it down.

Get a damn good surveyor to look it over. This one has had lots of fiberglass issues around the hatches, windows, and structure of the pulpit and foredeck

    Get a good surveyor

Mine is a 1990. I absolutely love her. Though mine is grossly underpowered with 454 crusaders.

I have been to the canyons many times in mine. She rides like a Cadillac, but floats like a CORK!! Not the nicest overnight chunking boat in crappy weather, but with its 19 degree deadrise at the transom, she'll get you there and back nicely in almost any seas.

Luhrs swears that they NEVER cored a bottom, yet have NO answer for me when I showed them a hull plug I cut out when installing a 1 Kw trasducer. Mine IS cored. I got a good moisture meter and check every year over the winter and everything is fine so far. (Not that she compares to the dreamboats, but cold molded customs are cored also) I just need to be much more careful when I make underwater repairs/upgrades. You will as well if yours is cored.

Heed the warnings and sales pitches.....get a good marine survey. Most of your description says mechanicals were "professonally gone over"...What does that mean???
