    Questin about Zincs?

So we slip our boat at a private dock.....no shore power any where around us......What puzzles us is the shaft zincs.....the zincs on the trim tabs and the rudder show very moderate wear......the shaft zincs...one in front of the strut and one below it.....take a beating.....so much so that we lost the zinc that was in front of the strut on our last trip.....I only know this to be a fact because we pulled the boat to run down to cape may to get on the chunk bite and when we looked at the shaft zincs they were beat......fast forward a few weeks and we dropped her back in the slip and ran to the 5 fb.....that was or last trip before pulling the boat and the zincs on the shafts were gone......the boat is in the water from april to december....Is this normal?....do we have a stray current issue?.....the other zincs all though 3 times the size show little wear.....just curious.

you need to have a test done, while the boat's in the water...this will determine the "cone" of potection you have...also can determine a few other things...lot's of current where the boat's slipped ?

    allways been a problem ?

fuel smell problem ? found ? repaired ?

What kind of test Jimmy?....thanks for the response by the way, we are bringing the boat up from the shore house to do bottom paint, zincs and we are pulling the starboard deck plate up for the fuel leak....the bilge, port and engine compartment are fume free....the starboard vent is open....I agree with you that it is the tank.....it has to be, we are going to pressure test the tank, replace the fill hose and waste a bunch of time that should be spent on the water.....my hands are tied but any advice would be appreciated....you know like a good tank guy ......Honestly I have a love hate relationship with this boat......love it when she fires up and you hear a head boat rumble from a small boat......love it when its snotty and the plastic is on and you trim her down and let all that weight plow through the snot....hate the 1 mpg and how it screws any range.....tired of pulling the motor with the back hoe......tired of chasing one problem to the next.....The boat has sentimental value and thats why it still floats.....THE ONLY REASON.....again thanks for the PM and I will give you a call and appreciate your straight forward approach...thanks again Jim.

You need to have a conductivity test performed while the boat is in the water. The check the miliamp flow of current to the zincs.

There's a possibility that you may have too much zinc on the boat. Too much is about as bad as too little. There's a science to it and any boat electrician can hook up a multimeter to the bonding system and check it.

We had the same issue with some zincs being destroyed and others not. What we found was that our struts/shafts along with the plate zinc on the transom was tied into the ground system on the boat. The rudder zincs were barely worn. While the boat was pulled last year we tied the rudders into the ground and now all zincs are wearing the same. Sounds like your tabs and rudders may not be grounded.
