Great stuff. It works very well. A few negative points:
1) Its rather expensive. About $400 for the props.
2) A little tricky putting it on correctly. There are two steps or coats , actually 3 if you count cleaning the props first which you should do. There's a solution of boric acid that's used for cleaning.
3) The PropSpeed chips easily and it could be scratched off when putting the props on. It's better to apply the PropSpeed after the props are on the boat, but not if it's windy. If you do you're props wil look like they have nonskip on them. I do mine indoors and then handle with care.
4) The PropSpeed does affect the performance of the props a little, but they stay good all year.
I also use it on my shafts.
On the shafts and thruster props it works great, wheels also good until you get too shallow. Struts and rudders, doesn't last long at all because of the constant blasting of water and sand but that's on a relatively fast boat. Seems to work really well on the slower ones. Application is everything, make sure it's done absolutely to the letter!
Put it on for the first time this Spring; applied to the shafts and props. Usually by mid July would have scaling starting on the shafts/props and would start losing speed. This year nothing sticks to them and I have not lost any performance to this date. I was told by some that I may be able to get 2 seasons out of 1 application.....we will see. I am happy with the results so far.
I'm on my third complete season with mine without being out of the water. It's just starting to need a new application. Keep my boat in CT near Fishers Island... used it on the props and shafts....two thumbs up by me...
Propspeed is a non toxic surface coating that prevents marine growth from sticking to the props/shafts/trim tabs/brackets/rudders. Any metal parts that experience water flow.
It is critical to clean the metal work absolutely bare of all previous paints, solvents and marine growth.
Always put 2 coats of the yellow (2 part) primer on the surface followed by the silicone clear coat.
Do not allow any runs in the finish as it will peel off from their.
Do not touch it once it is applied - ever! until it is time to remove and replace it.
If applied correctly you should get at least 1-2 seasons from it.
We are on the second season and when I had the boat hauled a couple months ago all the treated metal surfaces looked like new.
The previous owner had anything metal below the water line treated.
Just make sure your diver knows not to brush and scrape the treated parts when cleaning the hull. The stuff kind of feels like a coating of rubber cement.
I will definitely treat it again next year at haul out
Love it! I get two seasons out of it. Pre-Cleaning is critical, no question about it. I have never had one bit of growth on any running gear since 2005. It is expensive, but well worth it. . . it's a boat, anything good is expensive.
Mike
stuff works great. there is another one out now that Frank n Jimmys prop shop here has now also.
for what it saves in fuel at $5.00 a gallon you should wax the bottom..![]()
