Pricing and ideas on 300hp Diesels

Anyone have any insight as to the best diesel motors (in your opinion and supporting rationale) for small 250-400HP motors for a 30 ish foot deep vee hull boat?

What would I expect to pay for motors, and trans?

How would this cost compare roughly for 300-350hp gas engines?

Gas motors 1/3 or more cheaper and alot less maintenance, but alot less torque /resale value /economy, your call

Cummins remans, good warranty ,price . esp if you prefer non electronic engine, easy to work on, if you want to spend more and electronic go with Qsm ect. The new Yanmars are light and small footprint but in my opinion i;m Leary of spinning a diesel at 4000 plus rpms with that light iron.

I don't think a hard and fast answer can be made for the question asked without more info. In my own opinion, your best choice of engine's has to do with the level of service for that engine in your area. I mean it's only as good as your local dealer. There are question's about the application before anything further can be addressed. As far as the cost of an engine and transmission package goes, are you looking for new or re-con type engine? If you have a "New" boat project the current tier 2&3 emission standard engines is your only option. If you are doing a re-power, then recon engines are another option. The difference between diesel and gas engines is not only in cost. Again application (hour's a year usage, rating,commercial or pleasure, etc...) and budget are serious considerations. Why not just rebuild the engines and tranny's or I would have the trannys rebuilt and go with cummins recon. Save money and do alittle work yourself. Gas engines are a no go. You will miss all that torque. A set of recon 5.9's would be around 45k or so installed with your trannys, this is a rough estimate that is jogged from a local boat done about a year ago.
