    Porpoising

I have had this problem since I bought the boat, "porpoising". The boat runs very smooth until I hit a wake at that point it starts to porpoising. The only way I can stop it is to slow down drastically. Even if I am not going fast I still have the same problem. It almost seems that there is not enough weight forward. Also the bow comes up high if I throttle up slow. What I need to do is to throttle up fast get up on a plane then back down. This is the first center console I have owned. Is this normal? Or does anyone have any ideas how to end this.
    Thanks,
    Barry

    Trim Tabs

If your boat has trim tabs use them to eliminate this problem, if not get some fitted that should sort your problem Click here for more info.

Tabs are the ticket - If no trim tabs, trimming the motor down should help. Transfer weight up front if possible.

Are you taking off with the motor down? Use the motor trim if you don't already. I don't bring the motors up until I'm planed off.

Got tabs. In fact tabs are all the way down when I start off also the motor is all the way down until I come up on a plane. With my old boat I could throttle up nice and easy. With this boat at about 3500 rpms the bow is way high. So I need to come up hard on the throttle and than back down. Once she is on a plane I tilt up the motor it gives me a little more efficiency. I then use the tabs to run level. There is not that much weight on the boat. Up forward I have a 15# Claw anchor with 600' of 3/8 nylon. In the forward well I have a 11# Danforth with 200' of 3/8 nylon. In front of the console is a cooler with tackle. Under the console I have 2 tool boxes and safety equipment. Behind the helm is the leaning post in that storage are 2 gallons of oil + the oil tank. The fuel tank (200 gallons) starts at the forward end of the leaning post and ends up 1/2 way back to the transom. In the transom storage I have a cutting board, fenders and lines. I think that I am pretty well balanced. It has been suggested that the motor needs to be raised. I'm not sure if this needs to be done because of the strange hull configuration. There are some old pictures in an album on this site. I was just sent a message that my pitch could be wrong and not allowing me to get out of the fast enough. Any Ideas who to know if I am propped right. Also would a hydrofoil help?
Thanks in advance please keep the answers coming

If it were me, i would take it to who ever does the servicing and repairs for you and get there opinion.
Also you could email the boats manufacturer and see if they have an idea or see what has been changed from original.

Andy, I sent this message to Edgewater. As you can see by their reply they are aware of this situation.

    Jeremiah,
Finally I am able to start using my boat (time constraints)

    The answer from Edgewater

    Barry,
This boat did require some use of the tabs to help prevent this issue. Make sure the trim tabs are down, this will keep the bow down and prevent the porpoising. You can leave the tabs down a little to help get the boat up on plane quicker as well! This issue was more pronounced with a single engine rather than duals. Hope this helps!
    Best regards,

My next move is to see what Yamaha says my WOT RPM's should be. I cant get above 5600. Also I am going to see if my engine is at the correct height.I will then contact Michigan Wheel give them the boat specs and see what they recommend as far as size and pitch.

Here is the other part of the story.

The motor that is on there now is not the original The hull is a 96. It was bought by the original owner in 98 it came with a Johnson which blew up in 01. He then replaced it with a 250hp Yamaha. The motor has a very long (to my eyes) shaft. Also my hull is about 30" forward of my transom. I know that does not make sense but my tabs are forward of my transom and the bottom of my transom is about 10" higher than the bottom of my hull. I have uploaded a few pictures to an album named Boat Bottom Old.

Thank you all for the advice. I plan on getting to the bottom of this.
    Barry

    Barry,

Max rpm on the Yamaha 250 4 stroke is 5600rpm.
As they have admitted there is a problem with a single engine and the Yamaha you have fitted now will be much heavier than the original 2 stroke this may be compounding the problem, but this is only my idea i am no expert.
Lets hope JAWS12 chimes in i am sure he would give you the definitive answer on that one.

I have also posted the picture of your boat so other people can see what you are talking about.
