Ok Guys,
A friend of a friend is looking to build a Sportfisher locally and as the title suggests, from timber, looking to find some "Off the shelf" plans for one............... is there any place we can buy these? we were looking in the 55-60ft range. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Many of the oldest Carolina boats and the old Merritts, Rybovich etc are/were made from wood and unglassed - not cold molded jig built but framed and planked:
I have often thought there was no reason why a Phuket boat yard could not produce something like this. The hull proportions would be different to what they normally build (those single engine narrow hull sampans), as well as the shape of the house etc... but fundamentally I am sure the skills are there. I'd get it glassed though. What power does your buddy intend to have in her? |

Andy, is your buddy thinking single or twins? If she only needs to go 10-12 knots there could be a good case for single engine power - fewer things to go wrong and/or to maintain, the boatyards are familiar with that kind of boat (no issues with shaft alignment) etc etc. One of those big engines that those ring netters have should give you plenty of power to spare.
If she's only going to go 10-12 knots you probably also don't need a sportfisher style hull unless you want those lines. I've been on many of those sampan hulls and I find they are pretty good sea boats (long/narrow so they go easily through the waves) and have a very clear flat wake with practically zero whitewater that brings fish all the way up right behind the transom. The biggest problem with the way they traditionally build that style of boat is that the helmsman is way too far forward to have good visibility on a squirrelly fish. Uwe and Bob rectified this with flybridge stations on the Andaman Hooker and the Short Time. I think with a little reworking the basic hull form could be a good sportfishing boat. For those guys who aren't as familiar with what we are discussing, here is a typical example of a Phuket sampan: ![]() ![]() Here's a sampan style hull from Hawaii which has been better configured for sportfishing (the "Karlyn" out of Haleiwa): http://www.sport-fishing-hawaii.com/....html?sm=38679 ![]() Another Hawaiian (Funai) Sampan "Tina Rei" ![]() Note the raised foredeck and hull sides on the Hawaiian style sampans: the house has been widened, both giving more interior room, the cockpit has been enclosed and there is a flybridge. There is really no reason why the Phuket builders could not incorporate all these. It is said that the Hawaiian sampan builders did everything by eye, not working off plans, and bearing that in mind I have some doubts whether the Phuket builders use plans either (although I could be wrong). If you need to go fast then you need the deep vee or modified vee hull shapes that will get you on plane, and more power etc, but if you don't need the speed there is an awful lot going for the traditional sampan hull form (I reckon anyway). Some of the most famous sportfishing boats ever had a hull shape like this - Henry Chee's MALIA and even the ALMA G in the Bay of Islands and if I'm not wrong the SEA BABY III in Kona was built by Funai, the famous sampan builder. I guess this has drifted off your original topic but just some ideas floating around in my head... |
