Penzoil Marine Premium Plus vs Penzoil Marine XLF

Was just in Wally World they are selling gallon jugs of Penzoil Marine XLF for $13.00 per Gallon. I buy Penzoil Marine Premium Plus and pay about $17.00 per gallon. The way the motor uses oil (i have burned 9 gallons since March) I'm wondering if I should change. Does any one have any experience.
The motor is a 2001 Yamaha 250hp OX66 with about 435 hours on it. Opinions please.
    Thanks,
    BT

you really want to avoid using a cheap grade of oil like that...reason being, penzil specifically, will leave a waxy build up,this build up will foul the oxygen sensor in your engine, this can and will cause the engine to detonate, due to a lean fuel condition.
    i know there's guys who swear,oil is oil,i promise you,there's a huge difference.
engine mfg's call for an oil with certain characteristics, the mfg's have an oil formulated for them, and what their engines require.mfg's oil is allways the best choice...
if you're gonna insist on using that oil,i suggest you invest in "merc power tune",it's an engine decarb,i would highly reccomend you run a can of decarb through the engine monthly...

if you've never serviced the oxygen sensor,or the tube,i reccomend you take a look at those parts...if the tube becomes clogged, the engine will make a dull rattling noise...the engine will also lose a few hundred rpm from the top end...

The Pennzoil Premum plus seems to be fine oil based on several independant laboratory tests comparing various brands as to flash points, and other technical specs I can't recall. I was a Yamilube purest for several years, but changed over to the Pennz Pemium plus after many positive reports--- no problems on my end. Do't know anything about the cheaper Pennzoil you refer to.
After owning 3 separate OX66 engines, I've learned a couple of things that might help--- particularly if you spennd a lot of time trolling. First, most OX66's ( and all 3 I have owned), are set at the factory with a break in setting for the VRO pump. People never have this adjusted after the break in period and the unit pumps way too much oil at low RPM's. It's an easy check and easy adjustment that willl save money and reduce carbon build up with no fear that enough oil is being properly mixed--- just follow the specs for the VRO adjustment.
Secondly, I remove and clean the O2 sensor and tube about once a year--- easy if you have the correct socket from any parts store for about $10.
I'm also an advocate of shock treatments once a year, but some will disagree.

    Thanks Jawz,
I have been using Premium Plus since I got the boat. It is the same oil the original owner used. I also (as did the original owner) use Ring Free every time I put gas in at 1 ounce per 10 gallons of fuel. The o2 sensors and VST filter have been cleaned and or replaced every year I have a 10 Micron water separator which I keep an eye on and change out each spring. Along with the plugs. So far there have been no motor issues. I was just curious of the difference between the 2 different Penzoil grades. But I guess "if it's not broke don't fix it" so I will stay with what has been working. I may be looking at another $100.00 or so a year. Hell I can piss more than that away at the drop of a hat.
    Thanks for your insight.
