Outboard smoke during startup...

I have twin Merc 150 EFI outboards. One thing that I can't stand is the amount of smoke created when I start the motors. My buddy has twin Yamahas which produce a relatively small amount of smoke. Engine manufacturers aside, is there any thing that I can do (type of oil) to reduce to amount of smoke? I should note that after the startup, the engine gets up to normal operating temp, its all good. Thanks, Will

What year EFI do you have? What type oil do you use? Ive got yamahas that smoke when I first fire them up after about 30sec the oil in them burns off. A lot of times its the oil after sitting up in the heads that you see burning off. Now if they smoke after about 1 min of running you might need to look at your rings. Hope this helps,Good luck

Rugger,

I burn Penzoil Synthetic Blend in my Yammi EFI 0x66... It doesn't smoke too much on the start up. Matter of fact I have a picture taken just after start up... Are your mercs smoking more than this???

Looks more like nitromethane.

I'm using the Penn semi blend and my carb'ed 200 smokes very little on start up.

Will, with them 99s you have about 6 years on them, you might want to have your dealer look at your rings.I had 95 o66s that after about 5 years on them they start to burn more oil.You can use the yamaha lube oil it a bit thicker.

On a more serious note, I think King has a predent suggestion on getting the rings checked. You may also want to try a couple of different oils and see if your engine perfers a certain flavor.

Thanks guys for the help. KINGINDABAG, I purchased the boat in 2002 as a dealer demo. I really haven't put a ton of hours on them. I do still have a year of warranty left. Do you think I should have them check out the rings. Or could it be the type of oil that produces more smoke? It's more annoying than a performance problem, the motors run great. But if there is a potential wear problem, I much rather have someone look at it now.
Thanks, Will
