Outboard questions force 15 hp
ok,
picked up a 15 hp force (1993 I believe but I cannot find a serial or model number, only the casting number 800-819553-C) fairly cheap last night for a duck hunter that I want to build. Moter ran good with the exception of a cronic overheating issue that the seller disclosed before I bought it and he was unwilling to pay a mechanic to find the problem. He said that as part of recent repairs he had the head gasket changed and had them check to make sure the cylinders were not scored or the rings were not screwed up.
I brought it home last night and this evening started breaking it down to see if I could find the clog.
First thing I did was drain the lower unit oil to find some water (not a lot)in the lube. easy enough to fix with a new seal kit. then I moved onto removing the lower unit and checking the water pump housing and impeller. Impeller looked brand new (seller said he just had it replaced) moved onto removing the thermostat cover off of the driveshaft housing only to find the cavity the thermostat goes into filled with what looks like RTV.
Any reason why someone would do this? how does the thermostat effect the water flow? does it prevent the water from flowing through the bypass until the water temp hits 105degrees. I am assuming that this is my problem and its not allowing water to circulate through bu am not sure.
Any help would be appreciated.

well its a cheap enough stat. change it out and see if that cures the problem

I think Admin is going to let me have this space
The goop may not have been true gasket sealant or they used way too much and it squeezed into the cooling ports running thru the system and gathering at the thermostat. Double check the gaskets scoop out the goop. Check the stat by putting it a pot on the stove with a thermometer and see where it pops open(check new ones also). Id gaurantee its the goop though. Good luck!! You should be able to find the temp rating on line for that motor.
