Opinions on small HP Mercury motors

My dad and I have never been big Mercury fans but the time has come that the 7.5 Johnson has died. We are looking for opinions on small HP Mercury's, 6-9.9 HP. Are there any ongoing problems that a lot of people are having with them? I know when the Verado's first came out all the bugs were not worked out. I know the small motors are not the same design as the Verado's. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The small Merc Motor are made by Tohatsu and are well made. The same motors are also sold under the Nissan name I had one sit for two years, changed the oil and filter, fresh gas and it runs fine. If you can find a Tohatsu dealer in your area the motor will be a little cheaper that a Mercury. I am running a 4 Stroke 30 Hp on my boat now with no complaints. Hope that helps
