Onan/Cummins Diesel Generator
I'm looking at a pretty good deal on a slightly used (<20 hours) 2006 Onan/Cummins Model MDKBL 9 kW diesel generator to replace my 20 year old 10 kW Westerbeke. I've done quite a bit of research, but can't find many real world opinions on the generator.
One thing that does not appeal to me is that the controls are electronic and software based rather than basic electrical controls. IMO, the basic electrical controls are highly reliable and easy to troubleshoot, especially if you're 100 miles from shore. The electronic/software controls usually require a technician with a laptop and a fist full of PC boards to repair.
Anyone have any opinions or real world experience with the Onan/Cummins marine diesel generator line?
Thanks in advance!

Can't Really Help You,
with this decision. But I much prefer "old school" myself. Most of the time a little common sense will get you back running. There is no common sense in computer controlled equipment. In my opinion, simp'ler is better at sea. Frank

try phasor
Hi jd i dont have much experience with cumins onan but i just put in a new phasor 8.5 kw in my ocean 6 months ago and knock on wood we have been happy with it so far after putting about 250 hrs on it. One thing that I like about the phasor is the controls and diagnostics are not computer controlled but basic electric. I also got the add on gauge panel to make it easier to monitor the vitals. The phasor 8.5 cost about $10,000.00 usd including shipping to me in Trinidad, so I cant imagine a 9 or 10 kw costing too much more.
good luck with the project
