Old OMC 235 issues
Well tried heading out for some bottom fishing with my Pops while he was in town for Christmas. Boat started out running well.
About 3 miles outside NRI, we ran into a bunch of diving birds. Slow down a bit to check out the area and see what all the fuss was about. Really wasn't finding much at all on the scope so we decided to continue on to our original destination. After being on plane for a couple of minutes the boat just stops like I brought the throttle all the way back but the engine stayed revved up. Brought the throttle back and put it in neutral. No loud bangs or clunks. Messed with it a bit and seems the engine is getting all the right signals but it's not getting to the prop.
Any ideas on what I may be looking at and anyways I can start to trouble shoot it?
Thanks!
Tim
Ps. Thanks for the speedy help Sea Tow!

Tim,
Don't know, but you may have "spun" a hub. Instead of the old shear pin's they have rubber hub's between your prop boby and the spline's. Do you have a spare prop to try? Not a bad idea to have a spare prop anyway. I believe I would swap out a prop of close to the same size and give her a whirl. If it hold's the load it's more than likely your prop hub. You can lock your prop down in a vise (requires a prop holder) and try to break it loose by hand, it should hold to a specifeid torque. Frank

At slower speed the hub should grab enough to get you home but wont give you speed. If not the hub it may be the shaft itself... Inside all that aluminum casing is a painfully thin stainless drives shaft. Not the end of the world to change but unfortunately will ruin a day or two of fishing time to get er done...
Dumb question. Did you try manually engaging the gear where the cable attaches? Sometimes cable linkage breaks or simply comes undone. We lost speed on one of our 250's going to bimini and it was as simple as the cable came undone. The cotter pin was never seen or heard from again...

Hey Deep,
I took a look at the cables while we were out on the water. Didn't see any issues and it really seemed like the powerhead was getting the gear changes and throttle adjustments.
Have some Honey-do stuff to wrap up tomorrow and then split some wood for the Holidays. Plan on trying to find an OMC manual and taking a closer look after that. Otherwise, I'll get into it after the Christmas weekend.
Thanks again Frank for the call and Deep for the help!

first of all, check the gearlube and see what you have there.Look for glitter in the oil.the pinion nut might have backed off allowing the pinion gear to fall off the drive shaft. The shift shaft also might have broken.
