    Oil dripping out of prop

Have a problem with the little boat. 50 horse Johnson. The oil is dripping out of the prop/lu area. I really don't know how to explain it. A picture's worth a thousand words.

You can actually see where the oil is about to drip off the skeg in the picture.

Any help? I don't know much about outboards. I can winterize them but that's about it.

I circled the area where the oil's dripping out of. The area between the bottom of the prop and the lu casing. Hope my description/picture are sufficient.

There are two prop shaft seals on the shaft to prevent water entry or oil loss. Old age and more often fishing line can get wrapped around shaft and the seals get cut causing oil to leak.Pretty easy fix.

looks like oil to me...when you winterized the engine, you changed the gear oil,yes ??
that oil is black, gear oil is clean...it's kinda normal for oil to drip outta the exhaust like that, after an old school 2 stroke has sat for a while...has it been ran since it was winterized ??? if not,it's fogging oil running out...remember guys, this is where the exhaust exits...

Yes, changed the gear oil so I knew it wasn't that. It has not been run since November 1st. So are you saying not to worry about it?

I would presure test the gear case before going through the seal change. Looks like dark oil to me. If it were gear oil it would be alot cleaner. If you did not change the lower end oil when you winterized i would drain it. if oil is getting out past the seals water was most likely getting in and the gear case oil will be milky..

it looks like oil that's ran down the exhaust tuner to me...i'm sure the cashier in the sports store,or the trade show exhibit guy may know more than me...

Alrighty...I'll take that as a no...as in don't worry about it

OTE...changed the gear case oil last year when I winterized and it was not milky at all. I guess that would eliminate the seal problem, because this has been going on for a while.
