    Ocean Yachts

We all know the reputation of the Ocean boats as the "flexi-flyers". At some point Ocean yachts bettered their hull design. At what year did Ocean make that change? In other words, what was the time frame of the "flexi-fliers". What is your opinion of a 1989-1990 48 Ocean? Has anyone owned or fished an 88-89 ocean 48?

The 89-90 48 Oceans are great boats but they are the old style hull form and are very wet and hard riding by today's standards. They are very efficient burning only about 38gph at 26 knots.

You want to look at "new Generation" hulls for a better ride although some are still better than others. The 53 was the first of the new hulls.

I think that reputation came about in the early eighties. I just sold a 1988 32SS and it was one hell of a boat for only 32'. We cruised some and fished it pretty hard for 3 years here in NC and had no issues at all. It was fast, dry and probably the most maneuverable boat I have ever been on. And we did not have a fortune invested in it.

I stepped up to a 2001 40 Ocean this spring and I am very happy with it so far. They are an excellent "compromise" boat that cruises very comfortably and covers all of the offshore fishing requirements that I have. Mine is solid, dry running and you can’t complain much about close to 1MPG in a 40' boat.

I have been on a couple of the newer 50ish Oceans and they seem very well built for the $

I have a 1989 44 Ocean that I've owned for six years.....as reelaxin stated it's a good all around boat.... I've fished mine here in the NE canyons with no issues.. it's comfortable whether cruising, fishing or entertaining... mine is a dry boat with descent fuel burn (~37 gph @2200 RPM @~20 knots) with J&T 671 TI's .....

    1991

To answer your question 1991 was the year the New Generation hulls were introduced. They dropped the bow way down in the front making a pretty fine entry. The stringers and hull are pretty beefy in the models from 91' on. The hulls sides and superstructure are all corecell foam core making them light but still strong and never will rot. I know the 45' the stringers are over 2 feet high and 7 inches wide forward of the engines. THe secondary stringers are connected to the hull wall as that is where the fuel tanks sit atop of.

If it wasn't for the 671 2-cycle detroits being in these boats they would be the most fuel efficient sportfishing boats out there. If you can find one thats been repowered with new technology diesels chances are it is the most fuel efficient. In my opinion these will be the hulls everyone wants when/if fuel goes to $10 a gallon.

I have a 1997 45' that was repowered with 485hp Scania D9's. Boat can cruise at 28 knots and top end is 34 knots. These hulls are very easy pushing. At 1500 rpms I am doing close to 18 knots and burning no fuel. At 1800 rpms I am getting 23-24 knots and burning 12 gallons per hour per side - about one mile per gallon. Boat burns 200 gallons on your average 70 mile canyon trip troll with the genny running.

I own a 1984 Ocean 55, and she is definitely not a flexible flier!!!! I have owned her for just over two years, and love her.

I love Oceans and would buy one for myself if it suited my needs but your statement is not true.
