I have been having some butt ugly noise coming from the running gear of my port motor and have no idea what my next move should be.
It started on my last canyon trip about a month or so ago…. As we were clearing lines I ended up wrapping mono in my Port prop (don’t ask). Other than losing a spreader bar I figured that everything would be ok. Just after that I noticed a vibration/rumbling coming from the starboard side when I put it in gear. The noise goes away as soon as the boat gets forward momentum but for aprox 3 seconds it makes a terrible noise.
A couple of days after we got back I dove under the boat to find a bunch of mono still on the shaft between the prop and the cutlass bearing. I cut it all out and was hoping that would solve the problem…. NOPE!
My next step was to pull the boat and check to see if I did any damage to the cutlass bearing. I had my mechanic (who is also one of my best friends who fishes with me all the time) take a look and he couldn’t find anything wrong with the cutlass bearing but did notice that one of my rudders was a little loose…. He tightened it up and we both thought that was it…. NOT!
With the boat back in the water, it’s still making the same noise.
Our next step was to remove the coupling between the shaft and the reduction gear and put the boat in gear to see if the noise was coming from the Reduction gear itself. (ZF 1.750:1 model IRM220-A-1 Serial # 23042E) No noise at all but with it not having any load on it…. Who really knows?
With the shaft loose, we could kind of duplicate on a smaller scale, the noise that is driving me crazy by rattling the shaft with our hands.
So here I am looking for some suggestions on where to look next.
While tied up in my slip if I put her in gear the noise never goes away as the boat never gets any forward momentum…. But as soon as I leave the dock the noise goes away after about 3 seconds. The noise happens in reverse as well as forward but doesn’t really stop/go away, when going in reverse.
My mechanic friend (Neil) seems to think it has something to do with my motor running rough and it hitting the side of the piece that goes thru the hull (not sure what he called that part)… but I don’t feel that it is running any different then it always has and is just as smooth as my starboard motor. Also... why would it start making that noise as soon as I wrapped mono around the shaft?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ted
