Crab mustard is good
silicones allow for more movement. Polysulfide caulks allow for less movement.
I'm just a big fan of silicones especially for caulking a windscreen frame to fiberglass.
Want to bed an under water fitting then you want to use a good polysulfide.

A lot of good info so far. IMO, don't use 5200 or 4200 for caulking, use it for bedding. I have talked to several guys at boat manufacturing plants and they smooth it with a finger that is wet with mineral spirits or denatured alcohol. Do not use a glove because it will nor retain any liquid. I agree that you should use tape, but be carfeful to have a very thin edge where the caulk meets the tape or when you pull it the tape will lift the edge of the caulk and the job you were so proud of will get messed up, I have been there. Also if it is hot dont let it sit very long before smoothing, either do a litle at a time or have someone help.

I have used the plastic bondo scrappers that are sold in a auto store. The are flexable and do a great job. I wet it then use it. They are brown and usually come in a clear package with three different sizes.
