new to boats, have some questions

sorry if my question are short and to the point but i tried posting 3 times in depth and my dam browser died when i hit submit.

    280 I/B Twin
    Single Jackshaft
    285 I/O Twin Jackshaft

what does that mean and wich is best under what situations

also engines wich are best and what does the gas offer that the diesel doesnt and what does the diesel offer that the gas one doesnt.
i know the diffrence of each in cars and what to expect but not when they are on boats.

the 280xf is listed as offshore but it doesnt weight over 10,000lbs so is it too wide to be trailerd?

    almost forgot
the stuff above with twin and single shafts are from the albemarle sight about the 280xf

    hold on there babaluie....

all right there brother....i'm gonna throw alot of info at you...so here goes....

jack shafts-what this is ....the engines are mounted midship and there are drive shafts that connect the engine to the drive, mounted on the transom

inboards-what they are...the engine and the gear are mounted together and the shaft exists under neath the boat....

    pros and cons...
jack shaft-it's a little more efficient, that's it...your boat is actually pushed via stern drives mounted on the transom-there's alot more up keep with this power system.the drives need to be serviced every year, the bellows will need replacement and there's a larger chance of failure due to amount of moving parts....repairs are usually pretty expensive-trust me,this is what i do for a living,i should know.....

straight inboards-fewer moving parts-the gears are usually hydraulic and failures are not very common....

    engines....
gas...well what we have here is essentially an automoblie engine that has been marinized-the exhaust system will require replacement at or near 5yrs-due to sea water being pumped through it there are other up keep points and then there's the fuel situation...a gas engine will burn more fuel than a diesel engine...

diesel engines..... up keep...the exhaust elbows are a point of replacement...as well as normal up keep....less fuel burnt, however higher initial price.....

    some helpful advice....
if you're seriously looking at that rig-which is an excellent choice...you want the straight inboard diesel power-this is the only way to go....establish a relationship with a qualified service company and let the good times roll !!!!

I/O is inboard-outboard- the engines are inboard and the drive and trans are out board on the stern drive. The are connected by the jack shaft

I totally agree with ib diesel. It may be a little more at first, but the savings in fuel will offset the cost over several years. The Albemarle 28 is techinally a trailerable boat: less than 10k lbs and beam of 9'6", but it would be a BEAST and would require special permits from DMV. You also have to consider the hardtop/tower, radio antennas, and outriggers. If you are going to trailer often, consider something a little smaller.

Could consider the 268 Albie if you plan on/need to trailer often. Not as much boat as the 280, but from what I've seen on the hard so far, still an impressive boat.

Will probably be going on a few sea trials of a couple Albies up at the Cape this spring. Not necessarily buying yet but I'll certainly spend the time checking them out

On the 268, you could do either gas OR diesel.

The gas numbers were pretty impressive, giving just over 2 NMG at cruise ... pretty good for that boat IMO. I haven't seen the diesel numbers on it but I'm sure the initial diesel $$$ numbers are higher LOL.

But on a boat this size, gas vs. diesel is a toss-up really. Pros and Cons to either here.
