SEAS WILL AND CAN CHANGE VERY FAST ! being 60 to 80 miles offshore is a long way in a boat under 30 and is even a long way in 30 foot range boats.
I have been caught in bad conditions in a 26 footer and 33 footer and 40 footers and 50 footers.
26 foot most have 8'6 beam = Man when the seas kick up i felt lost in the sea. When the sea grew i really started to see how small the boat was.
33 foot boat 10' 6 beam = Me personally i feel very comfortable in this boat but that is me. My father ran a 33 egg and it was a battle wagon. I have a 33 center console. The center console is nothing like the egg harbor i would pick the egg any day of the week in a bad sea. The 33 center console handles a big sea very well but having alot of sea time makes me feel more at home knowing what to do when bad things happin witch they do.
Just please remember this , any boat can sink at any time.
I went for a nice ride on my dads 27 foot boat and had a wave crash over the transome of the boat and the boat was gone in the matter of seconds. We were lucky we were sunk when other boats were heading through the area and get rescued. But it showed me that the boat was nothing for the ocean to swallow up like a minnow.
Canyon fishing takes time and exp. and finding a boat you feel comforatble with.
You can jump on pretty much any boat for a charter trip and see how they handle.
Just please take your time when looking into the offshore game and think alot before jumping in.
Also remember you need alot of saftey gear that will cost you into the thousands !
So when your gearing up please budget for the best in saftey aswell of a sea worthy boat.
Hope that helps some
