    New boat question

I am new to boats and off shore fishing. Any how I want to get a boat for fishing and playing would like to try some hudson canyon fishing also. What would be to small of a boat to take out that far. More than likely this will also be a used boat but only plan on doing 3 or 4 canyon trips if that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. if I posted in the wrong area sorry was not sure where to put this

I think you need a boat over 26 feet and probably in the 30's. There are some canyon runners under 30' but you needed to pick a good quality boat- Mako- grady - regulator - contender etc. There are wuite a few high quality boats in tha range You also must make sure the boat carries sufficient fuel. The Hudson is a long trip from everywhere

jb....Welcome to the site first of all....
responding based on what you have said above that this is all new to you. There is a tremendous amount of experience on this site with lots of time on the water.

I think the best thing for you to do is to gain some experience through others first. By that I mean hook up with others that have boats (and experience) before you do anything. Chartering would be a good idea to let you see what this is all about.

Being new to boats and fishing .... going offshore is a very tall order .... Not only is the boat you find important ... but even more so your ability to handle it.

Can you fish offshore in a "smaller" boat .... sure. But things can go south quick. Learning to read weather is important .... Its not just turning on the marine radio. We have all been stung by forcasts that were not accurate. Being offshore when this happens is not fun.

Nothing wrong with a used boat ...but again being new to this all make sure you have someone shopping with you that knows boats and can act as a second set of eyes. THEN GET THE HULL PROFESSIONALLY SURVEYED !!! Make sure its a sound hull and what needs attention gets attention.

This is very basic info ...and others will add to it
You started off right by asking the question here .... Lots of experience to get support from here

    experience...

eppefour pegged this one pretty well...
if you want to run offshore in a small boat, you need a true deep v hull, anything else will pound you to death...
you want twin outboards, and you will need the required navigation equipment, along with back ups,you will also need a full bag of safety gear including an epirb...
nothing, and i mean NOTHING is a substitute for experience-remember "baby steps" by that i mean, take the time to get to know your rig,how it handles, how much fuel you burn, and the most economical cruise speed-all this sounds like bs but it can and will save your day !!!
take the time to do your homework, ask some of the other guys what they run...i downsized from a 31 bertram to a 25 mako walkaround-i run that rig all over-it's a certified beast !! true deep v hull !!
remember this, there's plenty of fish inshore of the canyons, start out close, and work your way from there...
a good idea is to run the boat in the day time with the radar on and watching the chart plotter and the radar screen-this way you will get acclimated to what targets appear as on the radar-then you will gain confidence using the radar at night or in the fog-you'll know what you're seeing !!
when it comes to the choice in boats, the smaller boats,in my opinion, have a distinct advantage, they're cheaper to run..a quality made boat, the older makos, albermarles, contenders and the regulators are all excellent choices in a battle wagon.the walkaround versions are a great move-room for a little storage and a head, plus a spot to take a nap too !! the advice of hiring a surveyor is excellent advice-be careful of who you get,ask for references !!! of you're in the nj area i reccomend bob dunklegerger(great name huh??) he's a very reputabile guy and he knows the buisness...
again, take your time and make an intelligent decision-you want to buy the steak not the sizzle....
if you have any other questions, feel free to drop me an email....
    hope this helps !!

I have run the canyons in a 26 foot boat and ill be honest with you there was a few days i asked my self why !!!!!

SEAS WILL AND CAN CHANGE VERY FAST ! being 60 to 80 miles offshore is a long way in a boat under 30 and is even a long way in 30 foot range boats.

I have been caught in bad conditions in a 26 footer and 33 footer and 40 footers and 50 footers.

26 foot most have 8'6 beam = Man when the seas kick up i felt lost in the sea. When the sea grew i really started to see how small the boat was.

33 foot boat 10' 6 beam = Me personally i feel very comfortable in this boat but that is me. My father ran a 33 egg and it was a battle wagon. I have a 33 center console. The center console is nothing like the egg harbor i would pick the egg any day of the week in a bad sea. The 33 center console handles a big sea very well but having alot of sea time makes me feel more at home knowing what to do when bad things happin witch they do.

Just please remember this , any boat can sink at any time.

I went for a nice ride on my dads 27 foot boat and had a wave crash over the transome of the boat and the boat was gone in the matter of seconds. We were lucky we were sunk when other boats were heading through the area and get rescued. But it showed me that the boat was nothing for the ocean to swallow up like a minnow.

Canyon fishing takes time and exp. and finding a boat you feel comforatble with.
You can jump on pretty much any boat for a charter trip and see how they handle.

Just please take your time when looking into the offshore game and think alot before jumping in.

Also remember you need alot of saftey gear that will cost you into the thousands !
So when your gearing up please budget for the best in saftey aswell of a sea worthy boat.

    Hope that helps some

All the info is good I never planned to get a boat and just run 80 miles out to sea I have a good mind and know I need to learn things first. That is why I am taking a class next month offered by the coast guard. But your info an answers where taken to heart and apprecatie all the advice and expect to see more post about ideas and riggings down the road.

One thing i would remember besides the class witch is definitly a good idea is sea time. Get out on boats. Take a season and jump on as many boats as you can. I would be more then happy to have you onboard our boat for a offshore run. And there are many other types of boats owners here on the site that are always looking for people.

The best way to buy a boat is to fish them. Find a few styles and get a ride and find out what your comfortable with.

Everyone is diffrent some people look at me cross eyed when they see me over night in the canyon night after night
