Will(PiratesPride) left town this afternoon to go back to ECU. After he left I looked in the shed and he carried the grinders and sanders with him. He knew better than to leave me all alone with power tools knowing I may tear something up. I can't blame him as I am new at the boat rebuilding process! All kidding aside, he is doing a great job and teaching an old dog like me along the way. Stop by and take a look when you get time.
Sorry for not posting any updates in the past two weeks, Just got all my pictures uploaded and what not.
Got the whole inside Glassed over the past couple of weekends, I did this for two reasons, too add some strength to the hull along with adding thickness back that was taken away during sanding and to also have a new surface to glass the stringers to.
Before laying down the big sheets of 1708 I also layed a filet of epoxy and cabosil into the chines and then added a layer of 1708 tape over this to add some more strength to this area, then everything was covered with the big pieces of 1708 cloth.
I rolled out the cloth to the length needed then cut it into managable sections since it would have been a real pain to try and glass half of the hull at one time, I staggered the joints so as to not make a weak spot across the hull, I dont know if it matters in this application but everything Ive ever done in construction you always stagger joints, so I did it here too.
Finally I started ripping out the old transom, I am going to keep the outer skin and rebuild off of that with two layers of 3/4" ply and a good bit of fiberglass. Once that is done it will be time to start on the stringers and bulkheads.
I think its coming along good considering I am only working on this on the weekends while home from school.
Looking good!! I spent many chilly days tonging in a 20ft SeaOx...sweet little boat. Thanks for the update!!!
Looking good Will. Did you figure what your going to use for the stringers??
Lee, I looked into doing foam cored stringers but the material cost is so much higher than with wood and as long as I get the wood completely encapsulated with glass/epoxy they wont be going anywhere for another 20 yrs atleast. It would be nice to do foam/composite but were trying to do this on a budget so I will prolly go with wood, and alot of fiberglass.
Any more updates on this boat? I am looking at doing the same exact project and would love to see any additional pics/descriptions of how this is going. Thanks!
