Ok since we got this boat , starboard has always been a touch weaker than port. They live in the same boat, drink the same fuel, and have the same driver (Me)...
Last week starboard just seemed a touch weaker. Throwin a little more smoke each day, not turning up as fast as, and burning more fuel than starboard. Rather than fish her in the Ma and possibly break something I had the detroit gurus come on down...
First test was kind of a waste of time. These engines are DDEC which means most systems get analyzed by a computer. Basically they brought a computer to confirm what my computer says. Both computers say shes fine. Injectors injecting, turbos turboing, pistons pisting...
SO WHERE DID MY 200+ RPM GO!
Today we busted out the manual guages to check stuff out. If it aint injectors and we got turbo boost, then it should be that we are blocked on the other side of the blower. Well shit, that aint it... We do a quick clean of the inner cooler. Ok black smoke goes away. But... WHERE DID MY 200+ RPM GO!?
Maybe running gear is dragging or fouled.. Go for a swim in the cesspool... All shiny below the water, all turns free and easy... NOPE NO RPM THERE...
The rpm goes where shes supposed to on port. Infact she gets there so quick that she'll often cavitate trying to bring her sick sister along for the ride... Gonna dig into the fuel system tomorrow but I think we need an excorsist instead of a mechanic. All shows the way she should be. Just no power?
Yes fuel burn that side went up. Both airseps clean as can be and within a couple ounces same boost... Theres a touch of premature boost release on way up but no issue higher up. Shows 100% load at 2030rpm where the port is only 85%. Port goes to about 2300... I think missing that last fifty cause she's dragging that weak one along for the ride...
Tach reading accurate. At 2200 / 2030 she pulls so hard right that theres not enough rudder to get her straight.
Wheels fresh done. Not a scratch. Did underwater test to see if blade going out and all are dead on...
Possible there could be a fuel restriction even though burning more this week. If I came slightly off the stick she went to about 2050...
check the fuel lines at both the tank and the racor. I had this problem and it was shavings from the drill when they put in new tank. It blocks the fuel line just enough so that it cant get all the fuel it needs. I undid the fuel line from the pickup on the tank, pulled out the metal swirl with all the fine junk stopped up with it and it was fine. Pull the fuel lines off and take a piece of fishing wire with a small hook bend and run it down the line and pull back. I also had to pull a swab through one line once to clean it.
pull a string with a knot in it through the fuel line between the fuel pickup on tank, and the racor. Then send me a thank you.......be polite and nice and Ill let you come to my rigging class for free!
Turbo tests all good... Both computer and manual guages at both ends of the blower box.
Computer showing good compression but may have to go to manual guages if fuel hunt fails...
Hell... Might have to go hole by hole on injector change to ensure one isn't dumping...
In the past usually the first thing we check is the right one. This one is just being a pain and hiding from us... These computerized engines code if anything isn't right. They scream the second something changes and none of the computers at this point show a thing wrong???
