My boats vibrates

Started my Yanmars 315 , they seem to be running very rough at idle. The boat really vibrates seems to be starboard engine, I increase the rpms and it all settles out and runs quiet. Is this just a tune up changing the plugs or should I be more concerned. Oil was changed at the end of January , It was already running a little rough towards the end of the year. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Hotshot1,

Excuse me if this is a stupid question, but aren't Yanmars diesels? What plugs are you talking about? How many RPM do you have to pick up to get it to smooth out? Any smoke? If so what color? Does this happen hot, cold or all the time? How many cylinders on a 315? I'm assuming six, but I don't know Yanmars by model #. We need lots more information to do remote diagnosis.

they are six cylinders, It does smoke but doesn't seem excessive, they do vibrate in and out of gear , The vibration starts to settle down around 800 and is gone by 1100 rpms, sorry about the plug reference it was late and I wasn't thinking. I'm not the most handy around boats , I generally rely on other people to fix stuff for me, You need your dog or cat put back together I can do that very well. I ran it for about 1/2 hour today and did quiet down a little by the end only the transom door was vibrating and the head door. still a little smoke. The guy at the marina said a little vibration was normal and as long as it settles out it's ok. I don't know if he is correct and I am a little concerned.

I'm not particularly familiar with your engines, so I can't tell you how much vibration is normal. But I gather from your reply that this is a new condition. How long have you had these engines, and how many hours are on them? It may be time to get the injectors checked. Again, can you identify the color of the smoke? Blue or white is probably what you're seeing, and it can be difficult to tell them apart. If it's white smoke it's unburned fuel and will cause a burning sensation if it gets in your eyes (note: I don't recommend getting a facefull of exhaust) Blue smoke is engine lube oil and some smoke may be normal when the engines are cold. White smoke would also be an indication that injector service might be in order. Start simple and cheap and work your way up. I don't think I've ever been on a diesel boat that didn't have some buzz or vibration somewhere, so don't panic yet. Hope this helps.

I would classify it as blue, I also get a little slick around the outflow, This has been the same since I got the boat in JULY, The engines have 140 hours.

Avenger thank you for your help

hotshot the smoke at start up is normal for these engines unless you have block heaters on them. When they reach normal temps. they will usually clear up it is just the nature of high speed diesels.Change out all your filters and clean your air element then see what happens.GOOD LUCK

You need to change your fuel filters, make sure they are not running cold as that could cause slicking. Also it may need valve lash adjustment if it has not been done at the 1st big service after break in.Yanmars are very fuel sensative.
