I run the 315 in my Carolina. Some smoke at start up is normal, esspecially if it is cold out. Once it is warm there is almost no smoke.

Rough ideling when it is cold is also normal, I just bump the throttle up a little. You should be ideling around 800 and I usually idle mine up to about 1,000 sitting next to the dock warming up. Once the engine warms up the idle smooths out. I don't notice the problem as much in the summer when it's warm.

I think your first valve lash adjustment is due at either 200 or 250 hours, then the next one is due at 1,000 hours.

Like Packard said "Ask the man who owns one." With only 140 hrs, and being it's all relatively new to you I would guess that as Graceland said, it's normal operation. Keep in mind that none of us can see your boat from our computers so it's just as hard for us to diagnose an engine as it would be for you to diagnose somebody's pet over the internet.

Once you get more throttle time under your belt you'll be more comfortable with it. Don't take any shortcuts with the maintenance and be alert for changes which may indicate a problem. Other than that; have fun and go fishing!

I can definitely understand how you feel. This is my first diesel and first inboard also. I notice every little thing that doesn't sound normal. So far, 800 hours into it, the engine has been bullet proof.
