MTU Series 60

The boat we're looking at has the MTU Series 60 825HP engines. Anyone have any experience with the MTU Series 60 engines?

I have no experience personally, but from what I hear they are very dependable and economical motors.

I just spoke to an engine surveyor friend of mine. From what I understood, their exhausts are cooled with raw water and everything gets rusted. He also told me they are expensive to maintain, and are high maintenace. is there any validity to this?

He also mentioned that he hasnt heard of any claims of them being smoky.

Yes,a little bit.The charge air coolers are raw water cooled and tend to corode and leak leading to worse problems if not noticed in time. Also the housings sometime crack around the bolts in the rear of the cooler.I had some experiance with a pair that did this twice. The first time caused a makor overhaul at 500 hrs. give or take.2nd. at twelve hundred hours, but was caught in time.
